Spoilers for Bad Sisters season 2: Grace Garvey dies in episode 2, shortly after marrying Ian. Creator and star Sharon Horgan said she brought the story back to explore what life might look like after years of abuse—not to give Grace a neat, triumphant ending.
What is the tragic season 2 twist?
Grace’s death is the season’s early, devastating turn. Two years after the death of her abusive husband, J.P., she has married Ian. Soon afterward, distressed and fleeing home, she dies in a car crash. Her sisters are left grieving and trying to understand what happened.
The death also reopens the danger surrounding the Garvey sisters. Their past actions and the cover-up of J.P.’s murder return to the story as police attention and old secrets threaten the fragile life they have tried to build.
Why did Sharon Horgan kill off Grace?
Horgan framed the decision as a way to tell a story about the aftermath of abuse, including the isolation, shame and vulnerability Grace carries with her. In a December 23, 2024 interview with the Los Angeles Times, she said her original question was: “My original idea was what if it happened again? Would she be believed? What would her sisters’ reaction be? Could she go to them?”

Horgan said she had not expected to return for another season, but the response to the characters led her to consider what would really happen to someone like Grace after years of isolation and shame. The tragedy is therefore not presented as a simple reversal of season 1’s ending. It shifts attention to how abuse can continue to shape a person’s choices and relationships even after the abusive partner is gone.
How Horgan and Anne-Marie Duff described Grace’s final arc
In a November 20, 2024 interview with TheWrap, Horgan described the change in Grace this way: “All the way through Season 1, we watch her coercive husband isolate her from the people who love her, and in this season, she isolates herself.” Horgan said the creators wanted Grace’s death to shock viewers and to feel true to Grace’s point of view.
Anne-Marie Duff, who plays Grace, spoke of the tragic inevitability of her character dying alone after pushing away her sisters—and what Duff called “her salvation.” Their comments place the focus on Grace’s isolation, rather than treating her death as a twist for shock alone.
How Grace’s death connects to the finale
Apple’s official listing identifies season 2 as eight episodes. Its finale, episode 8, is titled “Cliff Hanger,” runs 52 minutes and is dated December 24, 2024 on Apple’s episode page.

The finale’s later reveal is separate from Grace’s early death: Ian is actually Cormac, a disgraced former police officer who deceived Eva and threatens to expose the sisters’ role in covering up J.P.’s murder. After Angelica strikes him, the sisters believe he is dead and plan to dispose of his body, only to discover he is alive. Una Houlihan ultimately helps protect them. The final scene sends Grace’s ashes out to sea.
The memorial scene Horgan considered but did not use
Horgan discussed an unused version of the finale in which Eileen, Eva’s menopause trainer, attended Grace’s memorial and a possible romance with Eva was briefly considered. Horgan said the idea felt like too much. The aired scene instead keeps its emotional attention on Grace and the sisters’ shared past; the alternate idea was not part of the broadcast ending.
