Bad Monkey is worth watching if you enjoy a crime mystery with a comic streak and a lead who can make a questionable investigator fun to follow. Vince Vaughn’s easy fit as Andrew Yancy gives the 10-episode first season its strongest asset; its main weakness is that the jokes and eccentricities can outstay their welcome.
What is Bad Monkey about?
Adapted from Carl Hiaasen’s 2013 novel, Apple TV’s Bad Monkey follows Andrew Yancy, a former Miami Police Department detective reassigned to work as a health inspector in the Florida Keys. When a tourist fisherman discovers a severed arm, Yancy is drawn into a murder investigation. The premise gives the show room to mix crime-solving with the oddball characters and sunlit setting of a Florida Keys story, rather than play as a straight police procedural. Apple’s series announcement describes the setup and adaptation.

Why Vince Vaughn works as Andrew Yancy
Yancy is a wisecracking, morally flexible investigator, and Vaughn’s conversational comic timing makes that combination feel natural. He gives the character momentum without making him seem like a conventional hard-edged detective: the pleasure is watching him talk his way through trouble, bend the rules, and keep pursuing a case even after his official role has changed.
TIME’s August 13, 2024 review made the casting its central point, calling Vaughn an “experienced wise-cracker” who fits the role so comfortably that the performance can make Yancy feel like an actual person. That is one critic’s judgment, not a measure of general consensus, but it captures why the series is most engaging when Vaughn is at its center. The supporting cast also helps keep the comedy from becoming a one-person show: TIME singled out Jodie Turner-Smith, Rob Delaney, and Michelle Monaghan as effective counterweights to the script’s silliness. Where the series loses momentum
The same comic confidence that makes Bad Monkey distinctive can turn into overkill. TIME’s reviewer objected to the “relentless quirk” and argued that 10 episodes were too many. That is a useful criticism: an eccentric detour can be amusing on its own, but too many of them can slow the crime story and make the season feel longer than its central mystery warrants.
The result is a show whose pleasures depend on your tolerance for comic excess. If Vaughn’s patter and the series’ parade of odd turns are the draw, the looseness is part of the appeal. If you want a tightly plotted detective drama, the extended run and persistent silliness are likely to test your patience.

Is Bad Monkey worth watching?
Yes, for viewers who want a breezy, character-led crime dramedy more than a tightly paced procedural. Vaughn supplies a clear reason to stay with the season, and the Keys setting distinguishes it from a conventional city detective story. The trade-off is a 10-episode narrative that sometimes leans too hard on its own quirks. Apple categorizes the series as comedy and drama; its first season premiered in 2024. The first season has 10 episodes. Apple released its first two episodes on August 14, 2024, then rolled out the remaining episodes weekly through October 9, 2024. Apple renewed the series in December 2024. In an August 2026 announcement, it scheduled the 10-episode second season to begin globally on Wednesday, December 2, 2026, with one episode each Wednesday through February 3, 2027. As of October 7, 2026, season two is still forthcoming. Apple describes it as an all-new original story, so it should not be presented as a direct adaptation of Hiaasen’s novel. When Apple announced the renewal, creator and executive producer Bill Lawrence said: “To get to go on telling his story with Vince Vaughn and this great cast, at least the characters who are still alive, is very exciting.” Read Apple’s renewal announcement.
