Avengers: Endgame did have an alternate-ending-related scene: Tony Stark would have encountered an older version of his daughter, Morgan, in a metaphysical way station after using the Infinity Stones. The directors said the scene was meant to let Morgan forgive Tony and give him peace before he died. It might have changed the emotional shape of his farewell, but there is no documented basis for saying it would have completely changed the MCU’s future.
What was the alternate ending of Avengers: Endgame?
The best-documented cut scene placed Tony in the same kind of metaphysical way station associated with Thanos’s snap. There, he would meet an older Morgan Stark, played in the planned scene by Katherine Langford, and receive reassurance from his future daughter. It was not a replacement ending in which Tony survived or the events of the film took a different direction; it was an additional moment around his death.
Joe Russo explained the intended beat: “The intention was that his future daughter, because these films are dealing with magic, his future daughter forgave him and sort of gave him peace to go. And the idea felt resonant. But it was just too many ideas in an overly complicated movie.” TheWrap reported the Russos’ explanation in May 2019.
Why did the Russos cut the Morgan scene?
The directors said two things worked against it: the film already carried a lot of narrative ideas, and the adult Morgan did not connect emotionally for audiences. Anthony Russo said, “What we realized about it was we didn’t feel an emotional association with the adult version of his daughter. So it wasn’t ringing to us and resonating with us on an emotional level.”

That distinction matters. The scene’s concept may sound moving, but it had to earn its place in a crowded climax. The filmmakers judged that a future version of Morgan was not established strongly enough for the moment to land as intended. Removing it kept Tony’s final sequence focused on the choice he makes and the people present for its consequences.
How would it have changed Tony’s ending?
| Version | Emotional emphasis | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Released 2019 ending | Tony’s sacrifice and the grief of the people around him | His arc culminates in choosing to save others at the cost of his life |
| Cut Morgan scene | A direct moment of forgiveness and reassurance from an older Morgan | A more intimate farewell, but no documented change to the outcome of the sacrifice |
Joe Russo described Tony’s sacrifice as completing a movement from self-interest toward selflessness. In a separate account of how they secured Robert Downey Jr.’s agreement to the ending, Russo said, “Our Plan B if he said ‘no’ was to talk him into it, because we felt it was the right thing to do for the story.” D23’s retrospective on the film also frames the sacrifice as the culmination of Tony’s character arc.
The available accounts support a change in emotional texture, not a different MCU timeline. The scene could have given Tony a personal assurance about Morgan immediately before his death. They do not establish that it would have reversed his sacrifice, altered what happened afterward, or rewritten later films.
Did Endgame have other alternate endings?
Yes. Joe Russo said the filmmakers wrote multiple endings, partly to protect story information when scripts had to be shared. He also said Tony Stark’s and Steve Rogers’s endpoints had been decided years before the scripts began. As he put it, “So we wrote alternate endings – obviously to throw people off the scent – or if you have to distribute scripts to people, you want to make sure the information is either redacted or not the true information. So there are many multiple endings.” ComicBook.com covered Russo’s comments in May 2019.

That does not mean every written or filmed variation was a serious contender to replace the theatrical ending. Some were exploratory or intended to guard spoilers. The Morgan encounter is notable because the directors discussed its purpose and why they ultimately removed it.

D23 reports that the home-entertainment release includes six deleted scenes, but that count alone does not confirm the adult-Morgan scene is among them. Bonus-feature contents can depend on the edition, so check the specific release’s listing rather than assuming the scene is included. D23 also describes a separate deleted moment in which characters kneel in tribute to Tony; the filmmakers removed it because they felt it repeated or weakened the funeral scene.
Is the 2026 Endgame: Encore footage the same alternate ending?
No. In its 29 September 2026 announcement, The Walt Disney Company described new footage for the theatrical Endgame: Encore rerelease that revisits Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter’s ending, with Loki arriving. The Russos characterized that addition as a later decision to move the story forward after they had originally treated Endgame as an ending to those stories.
This is separate from the removed Tony-and-Morgan scene. The Morgan moment was a cut emotional beat around Tony’s death; the Encore material is a later addition concerning Steve and Peggy. Neither should be confused with Endgame’s time-travel rules: Anthony Russo told the Los Angeles Times that traveling into the past creates an alternate future rather than changing the traveler’s present. That is a rule within the film’s plot, not evidence about what a deleted scene would have done to future continuity.
