She described grief, loyalty to Chris and the needs of their children as reasons she stayed single, while also saying she was open to finding love again someday. Her remarks describe her circumstances in 2024, not her relationship status today.
Why Taya Kyle said she had not dated
Chris Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield were killed at a Texas gun range on February 2, 2013. In the PEOPLE interview, Taya recalled being overwhelmed by grief and not ready to let her husband go. “I was deep in grief. I wanted someone to hold me and tell me it would be okay. I wanted that for a while the way anyone does when they are doing it alone, but no one was Chris and I wasn’t willing to let him go,” she said.
She also described raising their children as a practical reason not to pursue a relationship. Colton and McKenna were eight and six when their father died. “I didn’t see how anyone could build a relationship with kids who needed me. I wasn’t willing to take time away from my kids for that,” she told PEOPLE.
She said future love would not erase her love for Chris
Taya’s account was not a promise never to date again. She said she was open to the possibility of love in the future and did not believe a new relationship would diminish what she felt for her first husband. “I believe that people who are courageous enough to love again don’t lose the love they had for their first spouse,” she said.

She also relayed her father’s advice that “love is not a zero-sum game,” adding, “Maybe God has that in store for me some day and I’ll explore it.” The remarks express openness, not a report that she was dating or in a relationship at the time of the interview.
Trust was another concern she described
Taya said some people took advantage of her while she was vulnerable after Chris’s death. She framed the effect on her own ability to trust as personal: “I can trust people but to trust someone so intimately would take courage for me.” That was her account in the 2024 interview, not an independently investigated finding about those people.

What the 2024 interview does—and does not—establish
PEOPLE reported that Taya was 49 at the time of the interview, while Colton was 19 and McKenna was 18. Those are ages reported in April 2024, not current ages. Taya also said then, “I enjoy my life.” The interview documents what she said about dating and her outlook at that time; it does not establish her relationship status in October 2026.
The story is part of a larger public account of the Kyle family. Chris’s 2012 bestselling autobiography provided the basis for the 2014 film American Sniper, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Bradley Cooper as Chris. PEOPLE also reported that Taya started The Taya and Chris Kyle Foundation in 2014 to strengthen military and first-responder marriages.
