The result is a gentle, often comforting continuation with a more melancholy edge: Tristan’s return and Siegfried’s changed behavior give the season its emotional weight, while veterinary cases and village life keep it from becoming uniformly grim.
What Season 6 is about
The 2020 television adaptation, presented in the United States by MASTERPIECE on PBS, is based on James Herriot’s books. Its sixth season moves the story to 1945 in Darrowby and the Yorkshire Dales, as the war in Europe winds down. The setting remains recognizable, but peace does not instantly restore the old routine. Characters are adjusting to changed relationships, family responsibilities and an uncertain future. PBS’s series page frames the season around that shift from wartime strain toward renewed connection and hope.

The opening episode, “Gathering the Flock,” establishes the central disruption: James finds Siegfried in a wild, chaotic state, and Tristan’s return from war leaves him shocked by his brother’s transformation. James and Tristan decide to intervene, even as more welcome news approaches. The premise gives the season an emotional through-line without abandoning the series’ familiar mix of practical veterinary work and close-knit community life. PBS lists the premiere episode at 53 minutes and 5 seconds.
Does the season deliver an emotional punch?
Its strongest emotional material comes from the gap between coming home and feeling at home again. Tristan’s return is not a simple reset, and Siegfried’s behavior suggests that the war’s consequences have reached into the practice as well as the wider world. The season’s warmth therefore has something to push against: old relationships need attention, and domestic life continues to change even as the village looks toward peace.

That tension makes “emotional punch” a fair description, provided it is not mistaken for a claim that the whole season is bleak. The official episode descriptions also point to community celebrations, family developments and the return of ordinary veterinary calls. The mood is closer to comfort shaded by grief than to a war drama built around sustained tragedy.
How the animal cases and personal stories balance
Veterinary work remains part of the season’s appeal, but the animal calls share space with domestic and relationship drama. A particularly concrete professional conflict arrives in episode two, “Old Dog, New Tricks,” when James buys an X-ray machine and he and Siegfried clash over the decision. The episode also brings Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Pumphrey back into concern over Tricki Woo. PBS’s episode guide describes the dispute and the Tricki Woo storyline.

Across the season, the listed stories include a stubborn goat, James’s work at a dog track and a missing calf, alongside Helen and Jenny’s family story and Tristan’s place in the postwar community. VJ Day and the village Nativity provide public milestones as the year moves toward Christmas. This mix helps the show preserve its episodic pleasure while giving the characters’ lives room to evolve. Viewers coming chiefly for animal cases should expect them to remain present, not to dominate every episode.
What works—and what may feel familiar
The comfort of a recognizable world
Darrowby and the veterinary practice still provide the series with its distinctive sense of place. The returning setting is not just scenery: it lets small acts of care, community rituals and daily work register as a kind of recovery. For viewers who value the show’s settled rhythms, the season offers continuity rather than a radical reinvention.

A more melancholy variation
The postwar setting gives that continuity a fresh emotional texture. James Jackson of The Times called the show “cosy business as usual,” while Kendall Myers of Collider rated the season 8/10 and described it as what fans want, “if a little sadder than the early seasons.” Those are individual critical responses, not a consensus, but they capture the season’s balancing act: familiar pleasures remain, while the characters carry more visible weight.
Measured movement rather than major reinvention
The season’s forward motion is gradual. Ongoing adjustment links the episodes, while individual animal cases and village events offer their own points of interest. That structure suits a viewer who enjoys spending time with the characters; someone looking for dramatic twists or rapid plot progression may find the pace modest. The available audience comments include both appreciation for the relaxed approach and reservations about limited plot movement, but they are not representative polling.

Verdict
Season 6 is best understood as a return to the series’ familiar comforts with a more reflective postwar mood. Tristan and Siegfried’s altered relationship gives the season a meaningful emotional spine; veterinary cases, family stories and village celebrations keep that story grounded in the life viewers come to see. It may not be a dramatic reinvention, but its gradual movement from wartime disruption toward community and connection gives the familiar format renewed feeling.
