American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders is a four-part Netflix documentary about journalist Danny Casolaro’s investigation into the INSLAW dispute and the broader conspiracy theory he called the Octopus. Netflix says police ruled Casolaro’s 1991 death a suicide, while family members and colleagues believed he may have been murdered. The series presents that dispute; the sources cited here do not establish that he was killed.

What happened to Danny Casolaro?

Netflix’s official synopsis says Casolaro traveled to Martinsburg, West Virginia, in August 1991 and was found dead in a hotel bathtub on August 10. Police ruled his death a suicide, according to Netflix. The same synopsis reports that family and colleagues suspected he may have been murdered because of his reporting. Netflix’s title page describes the series’ premise, not an independent forensic finding.

Netflix Tudum adds that Casolaro went to Martinsburg to meet an unknown source and was found in a Sheraton hotel room. Tudum also recounts suspicions among people close to him, including a reported warning to his brother. Those accounts explain why the death remains part of the documentary’s story; they do not prove homicide. Netflix Tudum’s series background

The distinction matters: the police ruling and the suspicions Netflix reports are not equivalent kinds of evidence. The sources cited here do not include original police or medical-examiner records, court filings, or federal investigative records that would resolve the competing explanations. The circumstances of Casolaro’s death therefore cannot be determined from this material.

What was the Octopus?

In Netflix’s account, “the Octopus” was the name Casolaro gave to a theory about a hidden organization linking the alleged theft of government spy software with unsolved murders and political scandals. The documentary follows how he came to connect those subjects. The alleged network and its supposed links should be understood as claims in Casolaro’s theory and the series’ narrative, not as established findings.

How did the INSLAW dispute fit in?

Netflix Tudum describes the investigation as beginning with a dispute between the U.S. Department of Justice and Bill Hamilton, founder of the software company INSLAW. Casolaro’s reporting then widened into his Octopus theory. Tudum also discusses claims associated with Michael Riconosciuto, including an affidavit. These are accounts and allegations presented in the series’ surrounding material; the sources cited here do not independently verify them.

What does the series cover?

American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders is a four-episode Netflix documentary released February 28, 2024. It revisits Casolaro’s reporting, the INSLAW dispute, the broader theory he pursued, and the unresolved questions around his death. Netflix’s official title page is the destination for current viewing information; availability can vary by region.
