All of You uses a near-future soulmate test to set up a more intimate question: what happens when the person who feels like your other half is also your closest friend? Brett Goldstein and Imogen Poots give the film a quietly affecting center, though its restrained pace and uneven emotional momentum may keep its heartbreak from landing for every viewer.
What is All of You about?
Simon (Brett Goldstein) and Laura (Imogen Poots) have been close friends since college. When Laura takes a test that identifies her soulmate, its result complicates the life she and Simon might have shared—and the feelings neither has fully resolved. The film follows their friendship across years of missed chances and difficult choices.
That test supplies the speculative hook, not a puzzle the movie spends its running time solving. TheWrap’s TIFF review describes it as largely a MacGuffin after the setup; the story turns instead on the push and pull between friendship, romantic longing and the lives the characters actually build. Apple’s synopsis likewise foregrounds their missed life together and the question of whether they will change course. It is best approached as a character-focused romantic drama with a science-fiction premise, rather than a mechanics-heavy exploration of soulmate technology.
That distinction matters if you are deciding what kind of film to watch: the central tension is emotional, not technological. The setup asks whether a test can identify a perfect match; the drama asks what two people owe one another when their feelings do not fit neatly around other commitments.

Do Goldstein and Poots make the romance convincing?
The film’s strongest asset is the sense of familiarity between its leads. Goldstein and Poots play Simon and Laura as people with a long shared history, so their closeness can register in small moments as much as in overt declarations. The Associated Press praised their natural chemistry and singled out Poots as “revelatory.” TheWrap’s review also found the shift toward bittersweet romance engaging.
Goldstein and Poots have both spoken about the rapport they brought to the work. At TIFF in 2024, Goldstein told TheWrap he felt he had known Poots almost immediately after they met over Zoom. Poots told TheWrap that trusting one another helped the actors inhabit their characters. Those are comments about their working connection, not evidence that the actors’ personal lives mirror Simon and Laura’s; what matters onscreen is that their scenes have the ease of a friendship already in progress.

That ease does not settle every question about the performances. The Guardian found Poots emotionally compelling but judged Goldstein “unsure and underpowered.” That is a clear point of disagreement with viewers who may find his reserve suited to a man who has spent years containing his feelings. The pairing can feel moving without every beat of the romance feeling equally persuasive.
Where does the film lose momentum?
All of You relies on time jumps to show how the relationship changes, and those jumps can blur how much time has passed. The AP review noted that elapsed time is sometimes unclear. That uncertainty can reinforce the impression of years slipping by, but it can also make transitions and emotional turning points feel abrupt.

The film’s measured approach is another dividing line. The Guardian felt it remained in a lower gear for too long, while the AP’s warmer response emphasizes its bittersweet romance. If you want a steadily escalating melodrama, the restraint may read as underpowered; if you value small shifts in a long friendship, that same quietness may be part of its appeal. The emotional payoff depends on whether the accumulated history feels vivid enough to carry the film’s later intensity.
Is All of You worth watching?
Watch it for Goldstein and Poots together and for a romantic drama more interested in the cost of choices than in the rules of a futuristic test. The film has a compelling premise, but it does not make the premise its main event. Its chemistry and bittersweet tone are real strengths; its pacing and the balance of its performances are more debatable.

Rotten Tomatoes recorded a 73% Tomatometer from 63 critic reviews and a 63% Popcornmeter from more than 250 ratings in a 2026 snapshot. Those figures may change and are only a broad indicator, but they fit the divided response: critics and audiences do not appear to agree on how fully the film’s romance pays off.
