Spoilers for Alien (1979): Ripley survives by ejecting the Xenomorph from the shuttle Narcissus—not by defeating it in a physical fight. After escaping the self-destructing Nostromo with Jones the cat, she discovers the creature hiding aboard, opens the shuttle’s outer hatch, and fires the thrusters to force it into space. Her final report identifies her as the last survivor.
How Ripley’s final encounter with the Alien unfolds

Ripley puts on a spacesuit, opens the outer hatch, and uses the shuttle’s thrusters to blow the creature out. The screenplay text records this maneuver and the report that follows, though its page does not identify which script version it reproduces. Read the screenplay text.

In her closing report, Ripley says the crew, ship, and cargo are lost, calls herself the Nostromo’s last survivor, and estimates that she is about six weeks from the frontier. That is her stated expectation in the report, not an independently verified travel time.

Does Ripley kill the Xenomorph?
The scene is a survival encounter, not a hand-to-hand battle. Ripley uses the shuttle’s airlock and engines to expel the stowaway into space. The ending shows her survive and the Alien leave the shuttle; it does not establish the creature’s motives or confirm what ultimately happens to it after ejection.
What the ending leaves unresolved
Ripley’s report says she hopes to be picked up and expects to reach the frontier in about six weeks. The film does not show her returning to Earth. The immediate danger aboard the Narcissus is over, but her journey home is not depicted.
How the released ending differs from a proposed alternate
Ridley Scott later described a darker ending he had proposed: after Ripley harpooned the Alien, it would continue its attack, kill her, and mimic Captain Dallas using the ship’s controls. TIME’s April 3, 2017 report says the idea was not filmed; Scott recalled the response and concluded, “So we didn’t do that.” In the released film, Ripley survives. Read TIME’s report on the proposed ending.
The Dallas egg-chamber scene is a separate cut difference
A version-dependent scene involving Dallas in the Alien’s egg chamber is not part of the shuttle confrontation. In an interview published by the Weyland-Yutani Archives, producer Ronald Shusett said the scene was removed from the 1979 release because it slowed the climax and weakened the urgency of Ripley’s escape; the interview says it later appeared in the Director’s Cut. This does not mean it appears in every cut, and it should not be confused with a filmed alternate shuttle ending. Read the Shusett interview.
