Spoilers for Season 8, Episode 15, “Lab Rats.” Peter Krause left 9-1-1 after his character, Captain Bobby Nash, died in the episode. Creator and showrunner Tim Minear said the departure was a creative decision—not one Krause requested. Krause later said he knew the exit was coming and found it hard to say goodbye.
How Bobby Nash dies in “Lab Rats”
A dangerous virus outbreak traps members of the 118 inside a laboratory, and Chimney becomes infected. After the team secures an antiviral dose and evacuates the others, Bobby reveals that he, too, was exposed: his air-supply line tore in an explosion. He returns to the lab and gives the available treatment to Chimney, then dies after saying goodbye to Athena.

Minear described Bobby’s choice as the culmination of a redemption arc that began with the character’s search to make amends. The episode aired April 17, 2025. TheWrap’s interview with Minear and TV Insider’s interview cover the death and its place in Bobby’s story.
Why did ‘9-1-1’ kill off Bobby?
Minear told TheWrap that he wanted a major death to restore the sense of consequence in a series built around life-or-death emergencies. He chose Bobby because losing him would affect the ensemble most deeply, and he wanted the characters—and viewers—to have time to reckon with the loss before the season ended.
#1 Best Overall
When asked if Krause had wanted to leave, Minear said, “This was entirely a creative decision.” He added that Krause had not approached him asking to go. TV Insider’s contemporaneous interview offers the same distinction: Minear said nobody wanted Krause to leave, but the actor understood the creative reasoning behind the story.
What Peter Krause said about leaving
The day after the episode aired, Krause told Good Morning America: “He was willing to sacrifice himself so that others could see another day. And I will miss everybody dearly.” Krause also called the series his workplace for eight years and said he would miss Angela Bassett, the fire team and the crew.
In a September 17, 2026 interview with TheWrap, Krause reflected, “It was hard. I loved Bobby Nash and the audience did too,” and said, “I knew it was coming.” That later comment means he was aware of the planned exit; it does not change Minear’s account that the decision originated with the show creatively. TheWrap reported that Krause played Bobby from 2018 to 2025 and discussed his move to NBC’s Line of Fire. Read the 2026 interview.
