‘9-1-1’ Really Did Kill Peter Krause’s Bobby Nash

Bobby Nash dies in 9-1-1’s “Lab Rats.” The illness and sacrifice explain the plot; showrunner Tim Minear said the decision to kill Bobby was his, not Peter Krause’s request to leave.

Yes. 9-1-1 killed Bobby Nash, played by Peter Krause, in Season 8, Episode 15, “Lab Rats,” which aired April 17, 2025. Bobby’s death is part of the story, not a fake-out: showrunner Tim Minear said he chose to write the character out, and that Krause had not asked to leave.

How Bobby dies in “Lab Rats”

During a two-part emergency involving a virus in a laboratory, Bobby discovers he has been infected. He keeps that fact from his colleagues because he knows Chimney would refuse the only available antidote if saving himself meant Bobby would die. Bobby makes sure Chimney receives the treatment, then stays behind and succumbs to the illness. Coverage described it as the series’ first major character death.

That is the in-story reason for Bobby’s death: he sacrifices himself so Chimney can survive. It is separate from the production reason the writers chose to kill him off.

Why the show killed Bobby

Minear said the decision was his, not a request from Krause to leave the series. He wanted the audience to believe that danger in the show could have lasting consequences. He also said Bobby’s loss would affect every character and create new story for the ensemble. In Minear’s account, the sacrifice completed an arc that began with Bobby seeking redemption and continued as he found reasons to live again.

In an interview with TheWrap on April 17, 2025, Minear put the stakes rationale plainly: “I needed a major character death if I wanted, going forward, for the audience to feel any kind of suspense or that there were real stakes involved in any of the cases.” He told TVLine the same day: “if the stakes are never real, if there’s really no chance that any of this peril in which these characters find themselves amounts to anything, I think the show could die.” These are Minear’s explanations for the writing choice, not an official network statement.

What Peter Krause said about Bobby’s ending

Krause said the sacrifice fit Bobby and that he would miss the cast and crew. TVLine quoted his post-episode statement: “Bobby Nash was written in sacrifice and he was built for this.” He also connected Bobby’s choice to the risks first responders take to protect others.

Minear said Krause suggested the final staging: Bobby turning away from Athena and adopting a prayerful posture at the table. Minear said that choice helped keep the death from becoming overly graphic.

What is—and is not—known about a return

A 2026 TVLine report said Season 10 was set to premiere in fall 2026. That is a reported schedule, not a confirmed episode date, and it does not establish whether Krause will return in a later season. The available statements about Bobby’s death do not settle that question.
