Adam “Cope” Copeland believed WWE fans would have a harder time accepting John Cena’s retirement than Cena himself. That was Copeland’s personal assessment—not a claim based on polling or a conversation about Cena’s private plans. Since then, Cena’s farewell has concluded: WWE says he retired from in-ring competition at the end of 2025.
What Cope said about Cena’s retirement
In an interview with Screen Rant, as transcribed by Wrestling Inc., Copeland said Cena had thought through his retirement and was likely already coming to terms with it. He expected the adjustment to be harder for fans:
“John, he’s thought this through. He’s thought of every scenario and every conceivable direction and all of those things. He’s an intelligent man, so I’m sure he’s already come to terms. I think he’s been coming to terms with it for a long time. I think it’ll be harder for the fanbase to come to terms, which usually ends up being the case.”
Copeland had not spoken with Cena about the retirement tour, according to the report. His comments are best understood as an informed personal view, not inside knowledge of Cena’s decision-making. Wrestling Inc. attributes the interview to Screen Rant and requests credit to Screen Rant with a hat tip to Wrestling Inc. Wrestling Inc.

Why Copeland could relate to the end of a wrestling career
Copeland had his own experience with retirement and a return. WWE says an injury forced Edge to retire in 2011, and he returned at the 2020 Royal Rumble. That history makes his perspective relevant, but it does not make his experience identical to Cena’s: each wrestler faced a different career and made a separate decision. WWE’s Edge profile
Copeland also recalled a brief conversation with Cena after Cena returned, when Copeland was still with WWE. Cena asked how he was managing half-hour matches:

There are no words that can truly relay how much he means to this business.” WWE’s 2025 announcement described Cena as a 17-time World Champion with five U.S. Championship title reigns and two Royal Rumble victories; the current profile also describes him as a 17-time World Champion.
WWE said at the time that the event would stream exclusively on Peacock and that an official superstore would feature final-match merchandise. What “fans trying to cope” means here
The headline’s fan angle reflects Copeland’s prediction, not a measured account of WWE audience sentiment. The report offers no fan poll, reaction statistic, or estimate of how long acceptance might take. What it does capture is a familiar tension in wrestling: a performer may have spent years preparing for an ending, while fans are only beginning to imagine the show without that performer in the ring.
