What is the context of Finn’s quote?
In the scene, blaster bolts fly and batons clash as Finn faces Phasma. She calls him scum with disdain. Finn answers, “Rebel scum,” turning her insult into a label he embraces. The official StarWars.com feature says he adds “rebel” proudly and reads the moment as a sign that the former stormtrooper now knows who he is.
Why does Finn call himself “rebel scum”?
The comeback reverses the insult: “scum” is no longer simply Phasma’s dismissal, because Finn claims the word on his own terms and identifies himself with the rebellion. A 2023 article in the University of Southern California’s cinema journal, “The Recycling System of Star Wars”, offers a compatible scholarly reading, describing the reversal as giving the label “righteousness and dignity.” That is the article’s interpretation, rather than an official explanation of the filmmakers’ intent.

What is the exact exchange?
The official StarWars.com feature attributes “Rebel scum” to Finn. A secondary listing on IMDb’s The Last Jedi quotes page gives the immediate exchange as Captain Phasma: “You were always scum,” followed by Finn: “Rebel scum.” No official screenplay or transcript is cited here, so the quote reference is limited to the wording supported by those sources.
