Syrio Forel asks Arya Stark, “What do we say to the god of death?” Arya’s answer is: “Not today.” Their exchange appears in Game of Thrones Season 1, Episode 8, “The Pointy End.”
Who asks the question, and what is Arya’s reply?
Arya’s swordsmanship teacher, Syrio Forel, asks, “What do we say to the god of death?” She answers, “Not today.” Transcript reproductions record “god” in lowercase; the capitalized “God” in the title is a common editorial styling. The transcripts are secondary sources, not official HBO scripts. Transcript reproduction · Transcript reproduction
Which episode is the original exchange in?
The first exchange is in Season 1, Episode 8, “The Pointy End.” Lannister men arrive to take Arya. Syrio tells her to go while he stays behind, and the familiar question and answer accompany her escape. The exchange establishes that he stays to face them; it does not, by itself, establish his ultimate fate. Transcript reproduction · Transcript reproduction
Why does Melisandre repeat it?
The line returns in Season 8, Episode 3, “The Long Night.” After Arya has seen the danger of the battle, Melisandre repeats Syrio’s question; Arya then goes back into the fight. TIME describes the moment as a callback to Syrio’s earlier lesson. Episode transcript · TIME
#1 Best Overall
Across the two scenes, the refrain functions as a way for Arya to face fear and immediate danger. That is an interpretation of the scenes, not a separately documented canonical explanation.
