HISTORY.com reports that BBC Radio banned Bobby “Boris” Pickett’s novelty hit as “too morbid” for airplay. That account describes a radio ban, not a prohibition across the U.K. The song later reached No. 3 on the U.K. Official Singles Chart in 1973, though the chart record does not establish that the reported ban caused its later U.K. success.
Was “Monster Mash” banned in the U.K.?
Not across the whole country or every kind of media, based on the available account. HISTORY.com says BBC Radio banned the song because it was considered “too morbid” for airplay. The account does not identify the stations involved, how long the ban lasted, or cite a contemporaneous BBC record confirming that wording. It is therefore most accurate to describe this as a reported BBC Radio ban—not a U.K.-wide ban.

The Official Charts Company records “Monster Mash” entering the U.K. singles chart in 1973 and eventually peaking at No. 3. That sequence is worth noting, but it does not prove the BBC ban delayed the song’s chart entry or caused its later success.
How did “Monster Mash” become a hit?
HISTORY.com says Pickett and singer Leonard Capizzi recorded the track in under an hour. Pickett supplied the Boris Karloff-style voice that became central to its mad-scientist character. The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on October 20, 1962, according to HISTORY.com.

Pickett later described the idea behind the song in a 1982 interview with The Washington Post: “We knew just what we wanted: Boris Karloff as the mad scientist, on a slab in the lab, describing all the latest monster dance crazes.” This is Pickett’s retrospective account of the concept. He recalled that the team considered familiar dance crazes, including the Twist and the Mashed Potato, before settling on an invented dance.

In an interview with Classic Bands, Pickett recalled sales as “somewhere in the neighborhood of 4 million.” That is his interview recollection, not an independently audited sales total, so it should be treated as an attributed estimate rather than a verified figure.
