Writer A.J. Lieberman and artist Mike Henderson build the story around bee hierarchy and a criminal underworld, with Mason Shaw caught in the conflict and Shay identified as its Queen Bee crime boss.
What is The Hive about?
Image Comics describes The Hive as a crime series about former worker-bee criminals with hivemind mind-control powers. A new recruit is drawn into a struggle involving rival hives and a vengeful Queen Bee crime boss. The publisher frames it as action-packed neo-noir, using bee hierarchy as the organizing idea for crime warfare.
In an interview published February 12, 2025, writer Lieberman and artist Henderson identified Mason Shaw as a self-described “worker bee” pulled into conflict between rival hives, and Shay as the queen bee crime boss. The characters’ fictional power lets them control others through words; it is a supernatural story device, not a claim about real bee behavior or present-day technology.
Who created the comic, and how does the mind-control idea work?
A.J. Lieberman is the writer and co-creator; Mike Henderson is the artist and co-creator. Lieberman told AIPT that his long-standing interest in the social structure of bees eventually connected with the hivemind concept. He described the inspiration this way: “The saying about a like-minded group being a hivemind stems from the phenomenon that bees in a hive can seemingly instantly act as one.” That is the creator’s account of the idea behind the comic, rather than a scientific explanation.

The comic’s clearest appeal is its mash-up of neo-noir crime, rival criminal factions, bee-hive hierarchy, and supernatural verbal control. Its publisher explicitly promotes “sex, violence and bees,” so readers should expect adult-leaning crime-story elements; the cited publisher and interview material does not establish an official age rating or formal content advisory.

Lieberman said in Image Comics’ February 2025 announcement, “This makes all our hard work worthwhile. I can not wait for readers to get sucked deeper into the lives of these characters for no other reason than i know the mayhem coming their way and I promise, sex, violence and bees play a huge part! Welcome to the Hive!” Henderson likewise described the reprint as a second chance to follow Mason Shaw’s story. Together, their comments make the comic’s intended combination clear: crime, mayhem, and a deliberately strange bee-themed power structure.
