The WWE Hall of Famer who said he was scared of Brock Lesnar is Rey Mysterio. In a September 2025 interview, he described realizing how intimidating Lesnar was only after facing him in the ring. It was a personal recollection while discussing John Cena’s scheduled match with Lesnar—not a specific safety instruction to Cena.
What Rey Mysterio said about Brock Lesnar
Speaking on RAW Recap, Mysterio reflected on his first time in the ring with Lesnar: “I honestly didn’t realize that I was scared of Brock until I stepped in the ring with him for the first time.” Fightful’s September 11, 2025 report transcribed the interview.
Mysterio was describing his own reaction to Lesnar’s size and presence. The headline’s word “warns” should not be read as evidence that Mysterio told Cena to take a particular action or issued a formal safety warning.
Why Cena was part of the conversation
Mysterio’s comments came as he discussed Cena’s then-scheduled match against Lesnar at Wrestlepalooza on September 20, 2025. He also said he had watched Cena and Cody Rhodes wrestle at SummerSlam from home and had messaged both afterward to congratulate them.

The interview was not the only time fear of Lesnar came up in the storyline. On the August 8, 2025 episode of SmackDown, Cena separately acknowledged being afraid of Lesnar while saying he would not back down. Pro Wrestling Torch’s event report covered Cena’s statement after Lesnar’s surprise return following SummerSlam. Mysterio’s later interview and Cena’s on-screen remarks were distinct comments in different settings.
