Stefani said their version uses pizza dough rather than the pasta wrapping she described as more typical.
How the Timpano Dome became their Christmas tradition
In a December 2023 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Stefani recalled that the couple wanted to make something different from dishes already tied to holiday traditions. They came across the Timpano Dome and had been making it for a few years by the time of the interview. “We started off by always trying to find something that wasn’t a tradition — like, let’s try something different, try something new,” she said.
Shelton had described a timpano pasta dome as their Christmas tradition the year before. On The Jennifer Hudson Show in December 2022, he said: “She literally cooks all the time so our Christmas tradition has become a timpano pasta dome.” His account also framed the cooking as something they do together during the holidays.
What is a Timpano Dome?
Stefani offered a conversational description rather than a formal recipe definition: “it’s basically like a lasagna but it’s in this dome formed either with bread or a pasta.” The dish’s defining idea in her description is a filled, enclosed dome, not a specific set of ingredients or one mandatory outer layer.

What do Stefani and Shelton put in theirs?
Stefani said the couple uses pizza dough for the enclosure. She contrasted it with what she described as the more typical pasta wrapping, joking that some Italians might object, then explaining that they chose pizza dough because they liked how it tasted. That is their reported adaptation, not a universal rule for making timpano.
An older 2019 E! report described an earlier version containing pasta, cheese, meatballs and sausage wrapped in a butter crust. It is an older account, not confirmation of the couple’s current ingredient list. The cited interviews do not provide a complete recipe, quantities, or cooking instructions.

A wider holiday cooking challenge
The dome fits a broader pattern Shelton described: the couple tries to take on a different, unusual and difficult dish each year. In a November 2022 Us Weekly interview, he recalled that they had made beef Wellington in an earlier year and said, “But we always challenge ourselves and try to come up with a different, weird, complicated, difficult thing to cook every year.”
So while Shelton called the timpano their Christmas tradition, Stefani’s account explains how it entered their holiday cooking: they were looking for something new, found the dome-shaped dish, and made a version that suited their taste.
