At a Vancouver reception on February 7, 2025, Meghan Markle said she had not planned to speak before introducing Prince Harry. She shared a brief account of his place in the family’s morning routine, then told the Invictus Games athletes and their loved ones: “You are his family just as we are his family.” PEOPLE reported the remarks; an official transcript of the reception speech was not available in the reviewed sources.
What Meghan said at the reception
PEOPLE’s report, reproduced in Yahoo Entertainment, says Meghan took the stage at a welcome reception for competitors and their friends and families in Vancouver on the eve of the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 opening. She began, “I was not planning on speaking tonight,” and introduced Harry.
She described the family’s busy mornings: “With families…the big rush in the morning and getting ready for school and packing the lunchboxes and making breakfast and my husband is in all of that with all of us.” She then connected that home routine to Harry’s work with the Games, saying he would turn to his phone to prepare for Invictus. PEOPLE’s account quotes her telling the audience, “You are his family just as we are his family.” Yahoo Sports, also reproducing PEOPLE reporting, repeats that central line.
Why the family anecdote mattered
The story brought two parts of Harry’s life into one moment: his role in the daily family routine and his commitment to the Invictus community. Meghan’s closing line addressed the competitors and the people supporting them as family, rather than treating the Games as only a sporting event.
#1 Best Overall
That emphasis has precedent in Meghan’s public remarks about Invictus. In her official 2018 Invictus Sydney closing-ceremony speech, she spoke about the Novak family and the role Ryan’s parents played in his recovery, using their experience to discuss the wider support families bring to competitors. That earlier speech is separate from the 2025 reception remarks.
The reception was not the opening ceremony
Meghan’s remarks came on February 7, 2025, at the welcome reception. The Games’ opening ceremony took place the following day. The Office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s account of February 8 describes the couple meeting competitors, families, and supporters, as well as Harry speaking at the welcome ceremony. It says that ceremony drew more than 40,000 attendees and featured flags for all 23 competing nations; those figures apply to the ceremony, not the reception.

The Invictus Games Foundation’s transcript of Harry’s later closing-ceremony speech recognizes competitors’ partners, children, grandparents, and friends and announces Birmingham as host of the 2027 Games. It documents a different event and should not be confused with Meghan’s earlier remarks.

The specific quotations and the account of Harry’s morning routine come from PEOPLE reporting reproduced by Yahoo, rather than an official event transcript. Yahoo’s search-result reproduction identifies PEOPLE writers Stephanie Petit and Latoya Gayle and gives a February 8, 2025 publication date; the Yahoo Entertainment page itself was not accessible in the reviewed material. Yahoo Sports independently repeats the key “family” line, but it is also carrying PEOPLE reporting.

The official Sussex account provides context for the next day’s activities, not a transcript or independent confirmation of what Meghan said at the reception.
