The often-cited $10 million figure for Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt is an estimate of their combined peak wealth around 2010—not an audited total. In interviews after The Hills, the couple described spending heavily to sustain their public image, indulge in luxury, and fund Montag’s music career. They also said expenses continued after the show ended. Their recollections explain how they say the money went; they do not provide a complete accounting of earnings, assets, or debts.
How they made money during The Hills
Montag and Pratt became widely known through MTV’s The Hills, and their reality-TV fame brought them money as well as a high-profile image to maintain. The available reports do not establish their total earnings or show how much of their wealth came from any one source. In a 2011 account of a Daily Beast interview, Pratt warned against treating reality television as a dependable long-term career: “Reality TV is not a career. Anyone who says, ‘Oh, you can have a career in reality’–that is a lie.” CBS News reported his comments in 2011.

Spending to support their public image
In that same 2011 account, Pratt described a million-dollar wardrobe and a monster truck he said he bought to appear on The Hills. Montag said she had viewed spending as an investment in her personal brand. The examples reflect how they later characterized their choices, not independently verified purchase records. CBS News
Luxury purchases and private travel
In a 2013 interview, Pratt described an extravagant lifestyle, including private flights. He said fuel for a round trip cost $120,000, based on $60,000 each way. That is his recollection in the interview, not a verified travel bill. Montag described moving from shopping at ordinary stores to buying designer goods. Inside Edition reported their accounts in 2013.

Montag’s album was a major reported expense
The couple told Inside Edition they spent $3 million producing Montag’s album Superficial, which they said sold 1,000 copies. Both figures are their reported account; the article does not provide independently audited production costs or sales records. Montag later reflected: “I was just really young and naive and just didn’t know what I was getting into.” Inside Edition
Costs continued after the show ended
In 2012, Montag estimated that they had lost more than $1 million since The Hills ended, while noting that she had not calculated the amount precisely. She listed ongoing costs for clothes, hair and makeup, managers, publicists, agents, and lawyers. Her point was that the spending did not stop when the show did. “If we would have saved our money, it would have been better,” she told ABC News.

What the $10 million figure does—and does not—show
Celebrity Net Worth’s 2026 estimate says the couple’s combined net worth may have briefly reached around $10 million by 2010. A later Los Angeles Times retrospective describes them as having spent most of a $10 million net worth. Neither source provides a primary financial statement. The estimate should therefore not be treated as a precise amount of cash they earned and then spent: net worth is not the same as income, and the reporting does not establish a complete financial ledger.
The Los Angeles Times also reports that the couple declared bankruptcy in 2015. That later report does not, by itself, establish the details of their filing or how any particular purchase affected the outcome.

The January 2025 Palisades Fire destroyed the couple’s home, years after the spending they discussed in interviews. In the aftermath, Pratt urged people to stream Montag’s music, and Superficial reached No. 1 on iTunes. The Associated Press reported that an Apple Music representative said Montag’s biggest streaming day on the service to that point was nearly 600% higher than the previous Saturday. That figure describes the immediate response to the fire—not their earlier finances or the proceeds they received from streams. Associated Press
