The Mans described a deterioration in their relationship with Natalia; executive Jason Sarlanis said the team was shocked and moved quickly to include the development in the finished series. Their statements are allegations, not independently established findings.
What happened in the call revealed at the end?
According to coverage of the finale and reporting on the series, Antwon and Cynthia Mans contacted the producers roughly six months after adopting Natalia and about two weeks before the series premiere. Audio of that call appeared near the end of the finale. The Mans said their relationship with Natalia had deteriorated.
The reporting confirms that the allegations were made and aired; it does not establish whether they were true. The material available in these reports does not include Natalia’s response to the newly revealed call, so the scene should be understood as one party’s account rather than a settled conclusion about the family.
Why were the producers shocked?
Jason Sarlanis, identified in coverage as president of Turner Networks and Investigation Discovery, said the production team had believed Natalia had found a happy ending with her new family. “We genuinely thought Natalia had found a happy ending with her new family, so you can imagine we were all thoroughly shocked when that call came from The Mans.”

Sarlanis said the series was already finished and locked when the call came in. The team then mobilized to incorporate the development into the finale, according to the reporting.
How the call fits into the wider case
The finale’s revelation sits within the longer dispute over Natalia’s age and her experiences with previous adoptive parents, Michael and Kristine Barnett. The coverage says the series featured a biological-age assessment estimating that Natalia was about 22 at the time of testing. That estimate is distinct from the earlier court-ordered change to her birth records.

As coverage of the case describes it, the assessment is an estimate presented in the series, not an independently reviewed finding that resolves every aspect of the dispute. Neither the age question nor the Mans’ statements in the call should be treated as conclusively settled by the episode alone.
