Congress rescinded federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) for fiscal years 2026 and 2027. That action did not itself shut down PBS, PBS KIDS, or every local public media station. What a family may notice depends on its local station and the services it provides.
What did Congress actually cut?
The Rescissions Act of 2025 became law on July 24, 2025. It rescinded amounts previously made available to CPB for fiscal years 2026 and 2027. The law says the rescissions took effect immediately upon enactment.
The House vote was one step in the process, not the date the rescission became law. The House passed the measure 214–212 on June 12, 2025; the Senate passed it in July, and the House concurred in the Senate amendment on July 17. The act was enacted a week later, on July 24.
The enacted law’s CPB provision states: “Amounts made available for ‘Corporation for Public Broadcasting’ for fiscal year 2026 by Public Law 118-47 are rescinded.” A corresponding provision covers fiscal year 2027. The CPB clauses do not state a dollar amount.

The $9.4 billion figure sometimes associated with the action was the administration’s proposed total rescissions across affected accounts, as published in the Federal Register. It was not the amount cut from CPB alone.
How are CPB, PBS, and local stations different?
CPB is a funding and support organization, not PBS and not the owner or operator of local stations. CPB describes PBS, NPR, CPB, and local stations as independent of one another. PBS distributes programming, while local member stations provide services in their own communities.
CPB support has included station grants, programming and educational work, research and technology, and infrastructure. That infrastructure includes systems used to deliver emergency alerts to local stations, which then serve audiences and public-safety partners. A change to CPB funding can therefore put pressure on parts of the public media system without being a direct order to switch off PBS in every home.
CPB says that more than 70% of its federal funding went directly to local public media stations. That describes CPB’s overall funding model; it does not mean every station received the same amount or faced the same consequences.

What might families notice?
Potential effects depend on the station, service area, and decisions made locally. The funding rescission alone does not establish that a particular program disappeared, a station closed, an alert failed, or a family lost access.
Local broadcast service
A local station’s budget or infrastructure support could come under pressure. Whether that changes a household’s over-the-air service—and when—has to be checked with the station serving that area. A change reported by one station is not evidence of a nationwide change.

PBS KIDS and digital or app viewing
The law does not say that PBS KIDS will go away. The material available here does not establish the current availability of every program, stream, app, or service nationwide. Check the local station’s current schedule and the specific digital service your family uses.
Education and family programs
CPB’s fiscal-year 2024 budget justification reported that 44 public media stations led family-focused partnerships involving 2,161 events and 73,401 children. Those are CPB-reported activities from before the rescission; they are not a count of families affected by the law or evidence that the activities later stopped.

Emergency alerts
CPB has described infrastructure support for systems that help deliver emergency alerts to local stations. That role explains why funding for infrastructure matters, but it does not show that an alert failed or that any particular community’s alert service changed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you check what is available where you live?
- Identify the PBS member station serving your area, using your current local channel listing or the station information you already use.
- Check that station’s latest schedule and notices for changes to local broadcast service or programming.
- For PBS KIDS or other digital viewing, check the current availability in the app or service your family uses; do not assume a broadcast change also describes digital access, or vice versa.
- If your question is about classes, outreach, or family events, look for current information from the local station or the organization running the program.
When comparing information, match it to your station and service area and check its date. Broadcast, digital access, and local education programs are separate services and may not change in the same way.
What happened to CPB after the law?
The 2025 statute rescinded appropriations; it did not order CPB to dissolve. The Associated Press reported on January 5, 2026, that CPB’s board voted to dissolve the corporation after it had been winding down. That later board decision is distinct from the law, and it does not mean PBS or every local public media station dissolved.
