“Bohemian Rhapsody” began with a framework Freddie Mercury carried in his head, then became a layered Queen recording built over weeks in the studio. Brian May’s recollections and the Library of Congress’s account show how the band, producer Roy Thomas Baker and engineer Mike Stone shaped it together. The 2018 film is a separate work: Queen members and archivists helped recreate details of the band’s visual world, but that involvement does not make the dramatized film a documentary record of the song’s sessions.
How did Queen make “Bohemian Rhapsody”?
Mercury arrived with the framework, not a demo
Brian May recalled that Mercury brought no demo. Instead, May said, “It was all in Freddie’s head and on lots of little pieces of paper.” Mercury had the musical framework and notes; May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon first established the parts as a backing track, then the band developed and embellished them together. May’s 2015 recollection, republished by BrianMay.com from BBC News, captures both Mercury’s central vision and the collaborative work that followed.
Weeks of work in a changing studio environment
Queen began recording A Night at the Opera at Rockfield Studios in Wales in summer 1975. In his 2022 essay for the Library of Congress National Recording Preservation Board, Don Breithaupt places the sessions in the context of 24-track recording, which had greatly expanded what studios could do. Realizing the song’s ambitions took weeks and demanded extensive work from the band and longtime producer Roy Thomas Baker. Breithaupt’s Library of Congress essay describes a production assembled through layered performances rather than captured as one straightforward live take.
Vocal layers and studio craft
Mercury, May and Taylor repeatedly sang parts spanning much of the human vocal range. Breithaupt describes “literally hundreds of vocal overdubs”; Baker sub-mixed successive layers repeatedly to manage the accumulating vocal tracks. The stereo field carries vocal events from left to right, while May layered guitar parts and Taylor’s drums were augmented with timpani and gong. Together, these choices made the recording’s shifting sections and dense sound possible.

May’s 2024 interview with the Library of Congress clarifies the production roles: he describes Queen as co-producing, Baker as the producer, and Mike Stone as the engineer responsible for blending sounds. May credits Baker and Stone’s expertise while also emphasizing Mercury’s vision and the band’s contribution. Read the Library of Congress interview with Brian May.
What did “Bohemian Rhapsody” mean?
There is no settled explanation from Mercury in the available accounts. May told the Library of Congress that Mercury never explained the song’s meaning to the band; its meaning ultimately remained in Mercury’s head. Listeners can interpret its lyrics and dramatic changes for themselves, but those readings should not be presented as confirmed authorial intent.

How does the 2018 film relate to the song’s making?
The 2018 film Bohemian Rhapsody is a dramatic biopic, not a primary account of the 1975 recording sessions. Its production did draw on Queen-related materials and advice. Queen’s official channel says archivist Greg Brooks worked with the film team for months, making archival tapes, notes, handwriting, memorabilia, costumes and photographs available to the props team. Queen’s behind-the-scenes video description details that contribution.
Production designer Aaron Haye told The Credits, published by the Motion Picture Association, that May and Taylor visited and advised the art department; the production also had loaner instruments and access to May’s home archive. This establishes help with recreating visual and material details. It does not establish that the film’s dramatic scenes comprehensively or exactly reproduce history.

Where can you hear more about the song’s history?
Queen’s “Inside The Rhapsody” feature includes May, Taylor and Queen studio engineer Justin Shirley Smith discussing the song’s making and history. BrianMay.com’s November 2015 republication says the documentary originally appeared on the bonus DVD of Greatest Video Hits 1 in 2002; that historical release detail does not establish its current availability.
For the recording itself, A Night at the Opera is the album context for “Bohemian Rhapsody,” as described by the Library of Congress essay. Listening to the track with the vocal layering, stereo movement and instrumental additions in mind offers a way to follow the studio construction documented in the sources above.
