Gerard became widely known as Captain William “Buck” Rogers in NBC’s Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, which ran for two seasons from 1979 to 1981. The series was based on a theatrical film, and the character had a history before Gerard’s television role: Buck Rogers originated in Philip Francis Nowlan’s 1928 serialized novella Armageddon 2419 A.D., later appearing in radio, film serials and television.
