Karen Pirie returns with a stronger position for its sharp-witted detective and a knotty case that reaches back to a 1984 kidnapping. Lauren Lyle anchors the season, while its three extended instalments give the intertwined mystery room to deepen—and sometimes leave it feeling drawn out. The result is a generally engaging crime drama whose pacing will depend on how much time you want to spend with its many threads.
What is Karen Pirie season 2 about?
The three-part season adapts Val McDermid’s novel A Darker Domain, with television writing by Emer Kenny. In 1984, heiress Catriona Grant and her two-year-old son, Adam, are abducted at gunpoint outside a fish-and-chip shop in Fife. Ransom notes attract intense press attention, but the kidnappers then go silent; Catriona and Adam are never seen again.
Decades later, the discovery of a man’s body with a connection to the kidnapping gives the police a major new lead. Karen Pirie, recently promoted to Detective Inspector, takes on the investigation with Jason “Mint” Murray and Phil Parhatka. The case draws in political grudges and painful secrets as the team tries to make sense of a disappearance that has remained unresolved for years. ITV describes the production as three 120-minute parts; episode runtimes can be presented differently in listings, so check your local episode guide for exact durations.
The novel also follows the disappearance of Mick Prentice, a miner who crossed the picket line during the miners’ strike. McDermid’s account links his story to the wider mystery and brings labor conflict, class and power into the book’s past-and-present structure. That is useful context for the adaptation, but not every detail of the novel should be assumed to appear unchanged on screen.

What works in the new season?
Lauren Lyle gets more authority to lead
Karen’s promotion changes the practical and dramatic stakes: she is now leading the investigation as a DI, not simply bringing her instincts to someone else’s case. Lyle remains the center of the series, and positive reviews have singled out her performance and the character work around her. Mint and Phil return, joined by new cast members including James Cosmo, Frances Tomelty and John Michie.
The mystery gains depth from its two timelines
The 1984 kidnapping gives the present-day investigation a human cost as well as a puzzle to solve. The new evidence connects the old case to current events, while the historical strand opens questions about power, public attention and what can remain hidden. Critics have praised the way the timelines interweave, although the season’s many supporting characters and tangents may make the case harder to follow for some viewers.

The tone is not all grim procedure
The series leaves space for character dynamics and lighter moments alongside the darker material. What to Watch described this outing as “intriguing, exciting and funny”—one outlet’s assessment rather than a universal verdict. That tonal range helps distinguish the show from a purely procedural investigation.
Where does the season falter?
The main question is whether the case earns its length. Some critics found the long episodes well structured and felt the story did not overstay its welcome. Others thought the instalments were drawn out, with the middle section losing clarity among the supporting characters. The Times review excerpt indexed by Metacritic noted tangents and some guessable twists, while also saying the season improves toward a decent conclusion.

That divide is a fair guide for viewers: if you enjoy layered investigations that take time to connect personal histories and political context, the expansive format may work for you. If you prefer a tighter procedural rhythm, the same stretches may feel like drag. The central mystery does bring its threads toward a conclusion, but the critical response suggests that the journey there is less consistently compelling than the setup.
Is Karen Pirie season 2 worth watching?
For viewers who liked the first season or enjoy character-led crime dramas, season two is a worthwhile return. Lyle’s more consequential role, the team dynamic and the 1984-to-present structure give the show a strong foundation. Its chief weakness is not a lack of material but the way the extended episodes sometimes handle it: the story can feel overfull before it comes into focus.
