The proposed Elon Musk–Mark Zuckerberg cage match never happened. The latest substantial update, published by Forbes Australia on June 22, 2026, is UFC CEO Dana White’s account that he spent two weeks negotiating the idea and discussed a possible Colosseum venue. That account does not establish a finalized event, signed agreement or scheduled bout.
Did Musk and Zuckerberg’s fight happen?
No. The proposed fight did not become a completed bout. The distinction matters: there was public talk of a match, and Dana White later said he negotiated it, but the available reporting does not show that an official event was finalized.
In August 2023, Zuckerberg said Musk had not committed to a real date or official event and that he was moving on. In a Threads post quoted by ABC News, Zuckerberg wrote: “If Elon ever gets serious about a real date and official event, he knows how to reach me.”
He also criticized Musk’s proposed alternatives, saying: “Elon won’t confirm a date, then says he needs surgery, and now asks to do a practice round in my backyard instead.” Those were Zuckerberg’s reported public statements, not evidence that the two had signed an agreement.

What Dana White’s 2026 account adds
In a June 2026 interview reported by Forbes Australia, UFC CEO Dana White said he spent two weeks negotiating the proposed fight. “That was real. I was literally in my backyard for two weeks negotiating that fight,” he said.
White also described a possible Rome Colosseum venue. He said it “wanted something like $150 million to do it there,” and Forbes Australia reported that the money would have gone into a fund to restore historic sites in Italy. The figure is White’s estimate as reported by the outlet—not an independently verified venue quotation, a confirmed event budget or proof that money was paid. White’s account makes the negotiations more than mere online banter, but it does not show that the venue or event was finalized.

How the proposal began—and stalled
The idea surfaced in 2023 amid the public rivalry around Meta’s launch of Threads and Musk’s ownership of X. Musk suggested a fight, and Zuckerberg responded publicly. The proposal did not progress to a confirmed date and official event. By August, Zuckerberg said Musk had not confirmed a date, had mentioned possible surgery and had asked for a practice session rather than a formal match.
The later accounts support two different parts of the story: Zuckerberg publicly said there was no firm date or official event, while White said he negotiated the proposal. Neither establishes that the bout took place.

Did later contact revive the fight?
No evidence in the reported exchange indicates that it did. Fortune reported that unsealed court exhibits showed Zuckerberg texting Musk on February 3, 2025, offering help against doxxing or threats to Musk’s team. Musk then asked whether Zuckerberg would consider joining a bid for OpenAI. The messages show later contact and a more cooperative exchange, not renewed cage-match plans.
