The official MaXXXine trailer introduces Mia Goth’s Maxine Minx in 1980s Hollywood, where an acting breakthrough brings new risks: a killer is targeting starlets, and Maxine’s past may come to light. Written and directed by Ti West, the 2024 film continues Maxine’s story after X.
What is the MaXXXine trailer about?
The trailer’s central setup is a collision between ambition and danger. A24’s synopsis describes Maxine as an adult-film star and aspiring actress who finally gets her chance in Hollywood. As she pursues that opportunity, a mysterious killer stalks starlets and threatens to expose her sinister past. The official synopsis does not identify the killer or reveal how the story resolves, so those details are best left open.
A24’s official trailer listing, published April 8, 2024, presented the film as coming from the writer and director of X and Pearl and gave July 5 as its theatrical date—the original U.S. release date, not an upcoming one. Watch the official trailer on YouTube.
Is MaXXXine a sequel to X?
Yes. MaXXXine continues the story of Maxine, the survivor of the events in X, rather than introducing a new protagonist. An A24/Happinet regional page places the story in 1985, six years after the Texas killings in X. Pearl is another earlier film in the series, but the available official pages do not prescribe a viewing order.

| Film | Place in the story |
|---|---|
| X | The events from which Maxine survives. |
| Pearl | An earlier chapter in the trilogy’s story world. |
| MaXXXine | Maxine’s story continues in 1985 Hollywood. |
For the story’s chronology, Pearl comes before the events of X, and MaXXXine follows Maxine afterward. Release order is another reasonable way to watch the films; the studio sources do not call either sequence definitive.
