The finale, “Convergence,” ends with Abby firing at Ellie and Tommy in the theater, then cuts to black without revealing who is hit. Its final scene rewinds to Seattle Day One and shifts to Abby’s perspective. Ellie’s pursuit has cost her Dina’s trust, Jesse’s support, and the lives of Owen and Mel; the story’s next turn revisits the conflict from the other side.
What happens in “Convergence”?
The seventh and final episode of Season 2 picks up after Ellie returns to Dina and Jesse from interrogating Nora. Ellie admits that she hurt Nora to get Abby’s location—and that violence came more easily to her than she expected. Dina initially says Nora may have deserved it. Ellie then reveals what Joel did at the Firefly hospital in Salt Lake City and that she knew about it. Dina is shaken and turns away.
Ellie chooses the aquarium over finding Tommy
The next day, Ellie and Jesse leave the theater to search for Tommy. Dina gives Ellie her bracelet for luck. When they hear WLF radio traffic suggesting Tommy has been captured, they disagree about what to do. Ellie recognizes Nora’s references to a “whale” and a “wheel” as clues to the aquarium and abandons Jesse’s effort to find Tommy. Jesse accuses her of acting for herself; Ellie argues that Jesse’s loyalty to his group has limits, too.
Ellie reaches the waterfront by boat, but a wave overturns it. Seraphites capture her and take her to be hanged. A distant alarm draws them away before they kill her, and Ellie escapes to the aquarium. There she finds Owen and Mel. The confrontation turns violent, and Ellie kills both. Only afterward does she realize Mel was pregnant. Mel tries to tell Ellie what she can do to help the baby.

Abby finds Ellie at the theater
Jesse and Tommy catch up with Ellie at the theater. Tommy says Owen and Mel got what they deserved, but the group decides to return to Jackson in the morning and leave Abby alive. Ellie accepts reluctantly.
Abby arrives to avenge her friends. She shoots Jesse in the head, then holds Tommy and Ellie at gunpoint. Ellie puts down her weapon, takes responsibility for killing Abby’s friends, and says Joel acted for her. Abby replies, “I let you live and you wasted it!” She fires. The image cuts to black before the episode reveals what happens to Ellie or Tommy.

Did Abby shoot Ellie?
The episode does not show the result. Viewers hear the gunshot, but the cut to black leaves Ellie’s and Tommy’s fates unresolved. It would be inaccurate to say the finale confirms that Abby killed Ellie.
Why does the finale switch to Abby?
After the theater scene, the episode shows Abby waking at the WLF stadium base on Seattle Day One, three days before the point Ellie’s story has reached. The time card signals a rewind and a change of perspective, not a continuation that resolves the gunshot.

That shift reframes the conflict. Craig Mazin, the show’s co-creator and showrunner, said, “There is another side to this story that we have yet to really delve into.” He has also described Abby as the hero of her own story and Joel as a shadow over both what he did to Abby and what he did for Ellie. The finale therefore asks viewers to reconsider the same conflict through Abby’s experience; it does not settle how much of the next season will be devoted to that perspective.
What Ellie’s choices cost
Ellie’s revenge mission reaches beyond its intended target. Her confession about Joel changes her relationship with Dina, and leaving Jesse to pursue the aquarium deepens the rift between them. At the aquarium, the pursuit ends in the deaths of Owen and Mel—and Ellie learns only afterward that Mel was pregnant. At the theater, Ellie accepts responsibility, but her attempt to stop the cycle of violence arrives after Abby has already begun her retaliation.

How the finale changes the game’s story
Game spoilers for The Last of Us Part II. The television episode follows many of the game’s major story beats, but it shifts their timing and changes key details. The Seraphite-island sequence appears earlier in the show. The aquarium deaths also differ: in the game, Mel is not hit by the same bullet that kills Owen. She attacks Ellie with a knife, and Ellie kills her in self-defense. The show instead has Mel try to guide Ellie through saving the baby.
The adaptation also spares Shimmer and the dog Alice, who die in the game. Playing The Last of Us Part II is optional for understanding the television finale; it offers a way to compare how the same broad story is ordered and dramatized across the two versions.
