Jake Latimer was bitten on the foot by a sea krait at the Kele camp shore during Survivor 49. Jeff Probst says the bite was dry, but Jake was taken for hospital observation and removed from the game. In an exclusive account to Parade, Probst also described a brief loss of communication during Jake’s transfer that left the team at base camp unsure whether he was conscious and breathing properly.
What happened when Jake was bitten?
During Episode 3, Jake was at the shore with his tribe when the sea krait bit his foot. Producer Ryan Hopkins inspected the wound and called base camp. A boat was already at the beach to exchange camera equipment, so it could take Jake toward the production medical team.
Probst said production had an emergency medical team on site and Jake received care within minutes. The transfer nevertheless became frightening for the crew: the medical, boat and camera teams traveling with Jake briefly lost communication with base camp. In his account to Parade, Probst said the people waiting at camp did not know whether Jake was conscious or breathing properly during that interval. He recalled being fairly certain Jake would not return to the game when he saw the scale of the medical response.
Was Jake’s snake bite venomous?
Parade reported that the bite was dry, meaning no venom was delivered. That did not end the medical concern: Jake was taken to Lautoka Hospital and then flown to Australia for observation for signs of envenomation. CBS’s official clip identifies the snake as a black-banded sea krait; Parade describes it as a sea krait. The available account establishes what was reported about Jake’s bite, not a general measure of the danger posed by sea kraits.

Why couldn’t Jake return to the game?
Probst gave three reasons: Jake needed further observation at a real hospital in Australia; the emotional upheaval had left him drained; and returning after treatment raised fairness concerns. Probst said Jake had received IVs, fluids and other treatment, and that sending him back into the heat and jungle could give him an advantage over contestants who had not received that care.
Probst compared the emergency with Caleb Reynolds’s medevac on Survivor: Kaôh Rōng, calling it “the most terrifying situation we’ve ever dealt with on Survivor,” as reported by Parade. He also said Jake’s removal meant he could get home in time for the birth of his child, which he had expected to miss.

Why did the episode show the production response?
In a separate exclusive with Parade, Probst said the show rarely breaks the fourth wall, but the response was necessary to tell the story. He explained that production reviewed the events and decided they were key to the story, then considered how to structure them so viewers could experience the emotional stakes. The interview adds behind-the-scenes detail about the transfer, communication lapse and removal decision beyond what viewers could infer from the episode alone.
Probst also said the tribe swap timing had been planned in advance and was not changed because Kele had fallen to three players.

Could Jake return to Survivor?
Probst said a return was possible, noting that the show valued Jake and liked returning players with unfinished business. He did not announce a casting decision or confirm that Jake would appear in a future season.
