He had first distinguished himself in amateur wrestling, football and sumo. Tenta died at 42 after a lengthy battle with bladder cancer, according to a contemporary report from LSU Athletics.
Who was John “Earthquake” Tenta?
Tenta was a Canadian wrestler whose professional career took him from amateur competition and university sports to sumo training in Japan and major wrestling promotions. In WWE, he was billed as Earthquake. The promotion lists his height as 6 feet 7 inches and his weight as 468 pounds; those are WWE profile figures, not a single independently settled measurement. LSU Athletics’ 2006 obituary, for comparison, described him as 6 feet 6 inches and over 400 pounds.
The Earthquake character was built around physical force. WWE identifies the Earthquake Splash as his signature move and highlights his rivalry with Hulk Hogan. LSU’s obituary also recalls that feud as a major part of how Tenta gained fame after joining the WWF in 1989.
From LSU wrestling to sumo in Japan
Before becoming a professional wrestling star, Tenta competed in wrestling and football at Louisiana State University. The City of Surrey’s 2026 Sports Hall of Fame biography credits him with three Canadian Junior Wrestling Championships, the 1983 World Junior Wrestling Championship and the 1984 World Junior Super-Heavy Weight Championship.

He then spent time in Japan, taking up sumo and pursuing professional wrestling. Surrey’s retrospective biography says he trained for nine months at the Sadogatake Beya sumo school in Tokyo and did not lose a match during that period. LSU’s contemporary obituary describes his sumo experience more briefly, saying he took up the sport in Japan for a short time. WWE’s career profile also notes his Japanese sumo background and success in All Japan Pro Wrestling.
Why Earthquake became a memorable WWE figure
Earthquake’s imposing billed size and signature splash helped establish a clear in-ring identity, while his rivalry with Hogan gave the character a prominent singles-storyline role. The available accounts identify Hogan as a defining opponent but do not provide a detailed record of the feud’s individual matches or outcomes.

The Natural Disasters and Tenta’s tag-team legacy
In late 1990, Tenta joined forces with Typhoon as The Natural Disasters. WWE says the team won the WWE Tag Team Titles and faced teams including Money Inc., The Legion of Doom and The Nasty Boys. Their pairing extended Tenta’s legacy beyond his Earthquake singles character: the large, forceful presence that defined him individually became part of a tag-team identity recognized by WWE decades later.
