Genosha is the stronger answer if “worst” means a concentrated mass killing and the destruction of a mutant homeland. House of M is the stronger answer if it means worldwide reach: Marvel says the Scarlet Witch’s “No More Mutants” action depowered 98% of the world’s mutant population. Those are different kinds of harm, not figures that can be directly compared.

Why Genosha may be the worst thing to happen to mutants

The Genosha massacre takes place in “E Is for Extinction,” the opening arc of New X-Men (2001) #114–116. Marvel’s House of M primer attributes the Sentinel attack to Cassandra Nova and gives the death toll as approximately 16 million mutants. The scale and setting make Genosha a case for calling it mutantkind’s most devastating single catastrophe.

1. It killed approximately 16 million mutants

The central argument is the immediate loss of life. Marvel describes approximately 16 million mutants killed in the attack. This is a death toll, not a count of people who lost their powers.

2. It devastated a mutant homeland

The massacre was concentrated on Genosha, a nation associated with mutant life and community. The destruction therefore meant more than a large number of deaths: it struck a place where a society had taken shape.

3. It was a deliberate Sentinel assault

The catastrophe came through an attack by Sentinels, machinery directed against mutants. That gives the event the character of mass violence against a community, rather than a broad change in the rules of mutant powers.

4. It erased lives and futures at once

A death toll on this scale represents individual lives cut short as well as families, relationships, and possible futures lost. That is a different and irreversible harm from surviving without powers.

5. Its horror is immediate and concentrated

Genosha gives the reader a single place and attack to grasp: a homeland struck, with catastrophic loss of life. Marvel’s description of the collected story calls the first strike “death and horror beyond belief.” The New X-Men: E Is for Extinction collection includes issues #114–126 and Annual 2001, including the Genosha arc.

Why House of M may be the worst thing to happen to mutants

House of M is not another Genosha-style massacre. In the aftermath of Avengers Disassembled, the Scarlet Witch’s reality-altering action changes mutantkind’s circumstances on a worldwide scale. Marvel’s X-Men history says that “No More Mutants” depowered 98% of the world’s mutant population. That figure describes powers lost, not deaths.

1. Its reach was global

Where Genosha’s devastation was concentrated in one homeland, House of M’s consequence is described in terms of the world’s mutant population. The scale is geographic as well as personal: mutants everywhere could be affected.

2. It removed powers from most mutants

Marvel’s 98% figure captures the scale of the depowering. It should not be read as a death toll or treated as equivalent to the approximately 16 million killed on Genosha; the figures measure different things.

3. It changed life for those who survived

For affected people who remained alive, losing mutant powers could reshape identity and daily life. The broad statistic establishes the scale of the loss, but does not by itself describe every individual’s experience.

4. It made mutantkind’s future feel precarious

When most of a population loses the trait that defines its place in the X-Men’s central conflict, the consequences extend beyond any one person. The event sharply changes how mutantkind’s continuity and political position can be understood.

5. It followed a distinct, reality-altering path

House of M’s devastation came through the Scarlet Witch’s “No More Mutants” action, not the Sentinel assault that destroyed Genosha. Marvel’s House of M reading guide maps the event and its tie-ins for readers who want to follow the story in order.

How to decide which was worse

Measure Genosha House of M
Primary harm Mass killing in a Sentinel attack Mass depowering through “No More Mutants”
Scope described by Marvel Approximately 16 million mutants killed 98% of the world’s mutant population depowered
Geographic shape Catastrophe concentrated on Genosha Consequence described across the world’s mutant population
Strongest case for “worst” Death toll and destruction of a mutant homeland Worldwide reach and loss of powers for most mutants

If “worst” means the most devastating episode of mass death, Genosha is the clearest choice. If it means the widest-reaching blow to mutant powers and the population’s perceived future, House of M has the stronger case. The stories offer no shared measure that makes one ranking objectively provable.
