David Lynch directed ten completed feature films, from the industrial nightmare of Eraserhead to the digital-video maze of Inland Empire. This ranking weighs narrative accessibility, formal experimentation, emotional force, visual and sound design, and how fully each film explores Lynch’s recurring themes of desire, identity, dreams, and menace. The order is a critical judgment, not an objective consensus.

What counts as a David Lynch movie?

This list covers Lynch’s ten completed feature films as director: Eraserhead (1977), The Elephant Man (1980), Dune (1984), Blue Velvet (1986), Wild at Heart (1990), Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992), Lost Highway (1997), The Straight Story (1999), Mulholland Dr. (2001), and Inland Empire (2006). It does not count his television series, short films, or Twin Peaks: The Return (2017) as features. The Academy’s filmography and the Criterion Collection catalog provide film and year context.

David Lynch’s 10 feature films, ranked

10. Dune (1984)

Lynch’s most compromised feature is also one of his strangest studio productions. Frank Herbert’s dense science-fiction world demanded large-scale spectacle, exposition, and a mythology that had to fit a feature runtime. The result has memorable designs and Lynchian oddities, but feels pulled between the filmmaker’s instincts and the demands of a major adaptation.

The British Film Institute describes Dune as a watchable oddity and reports that Lynch regarded it as a failure largely because the scale of the production limited his creative control. That context explains why it sits last here: its flashes of imagination do not cohere as strongly as his more personal work.

9. The Straight Story (1999)

Alvin Straight’s journey across the Midwest to visit his estranged brother, made on a lawn tractor, gives Lynch the basis for his most direct road film. Its patient pace, open landscapes, and gentle encounters stand far from the claustrophobia and fractured identities that define much of his work.

That groundedness is a deliberate strength, and the BFI has called it radical by Lynch’s standards. It ranks low only in comparison with films where his visual and sonic inventions, emotional unease, and thematic ambiguity work together more powerfully. For viewers curious about his range but wary of surrealism, it may be the most inviting starting point.

8. The Elephant Man (1980)

A restrained period drama about John Merrick, The Elephant Man centers the dignity of a man whom Victorian society treats as a spectacle. Its monochrome imagery and measured storytelling make it one of Lynch’s most accessible films, while its attention to cruelty, pity, and the gaze of others gives it a moral force that outlasts its more conventional structure.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences records eight Oscar nominations for the film, including directing and adapted screenplay nominations for Lynch. The recognition marks its place in his career, but does not by itself determine its position in this ranking.

7. Wild at Heart (1990)

This road movie sends Sailor and Lula through a violent, lurid America that mixes romance, comedy, grotesquerie, and references to The Wizard of Oz. Its deliberately heightened style can be exhilarating, but its episodic violence and tonal swings make it less emotionally cohesive than Lynch’s best work.

Wild at Heart won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1990, according to the Television Academy. The award is part of its history, not proof that it belongs above the films ranked higher here.

6. Eraserhead (1977)

Lynch’s first feature transforms anxiety about fatherhood into a black-and-white industrial nightmare. Its cramped rooms, strange figures, and oppressive soundscape make ordinary domestic life feel alien. The film is less a puzzle with a solution than an environment the viewer has to endure, and its images linger because the unease is so tactile.

The Academy notes Lynch’s hands-on role in editing, scoring, and sound design. That control is central to the film’s achievement: its impact comes as much from texture and noise as from its sparse narrative. Its deliberately claustrophobic form can be difficult to enter, keeping it below the more fully realized films above.

5. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992)

This feature prequel to Twin Peaks follows Laura Palmer through the last days of her life. Rather than offering the playful mystery and quirky community of the television series, it is bleak and intimate, placing Laura’s fear and suffering at the center. Its emotional perspective gives the film a force that can be missed if it is approached only as an extension of the show’s plot.

The BFI notes that the film has been reassessed over time; the Guardian argues that its empathy for Laura looks especially potent amid later discussion of gender and abuse. It is a demanding watch, but its compassion makes it one of Lynch’s most affecting works.

4. Lost Highway (1997)

In Lost Highway, a man’s life gives way to another identity without a reassuring explanation. The film’s loop-like, fragmented structure makes narrative instability part of its subject: identity and reality seem to shift under pressure rather than resolve into a single, dependable account.

The BFI and the Guardian describe its destabilizing form. It is an abrasive and compelling precursor to Mulholland Dr., with a harsher atmosphere and less emotional clarity. Its refusal to settle into one interpretation is the point, but also makes it a tougher film to connect with than the three above it.

3. Inland Empire (2006)

Lynch’s last feature pushes fragmentation further. A story involving an actress and a troubled production splinters into shifting identities, performances, and realities across a three-hour runtime. Its digital-video image is deliberately rough and immediate, making the film feel less like a polished dream than a disorienting experience unfolding in front of the viewer.

The Associated Press reports that Lynch made Inland Empire without a script and shot it on digital video; the BFI describes its length and splintered structure. It ranks this high for the fearlessness of its form and the completeness of its immersion, though its demands on the viewer keep it below the more concentrated films at the top.

2. Blue Velvet (1986)

A severed ear in a suburban field opens a passage beneath the tidy surface of small-town life. Blue Velvet turns that contrast into a defining Lynch image: the familiar world is not safe, but a stage on which violence, desire, and control have been concealed. Its central mystery gives newcomers a clear route into the story even as the film’s mood and moral unease resist easy answers.

The BFI presents it as a strong entry point for viewers ready for Lynch’s style. It balances an accessible investigation with a more disturbing vision of American respectability better than almost any of his films, but the emotional and structural reach of Mulholland Dr. gives that film the edge.

1. Mulholland Dr. (2001)

A Hollywood mystery that changes shape as it unfolds, Mulholland Dr. combines dream logic with a devastating emotional story about ambition, desire, and identity. Its first half draws viewers into an apparent investigation; later shifts make earlier scenes feel newly uncertain. Rather than simply withholding an answer, the film makes the act of interpreting it part of the experience.

Lynch reworked the film from a cancelled television pilot. He won Best Director at Cannes for it in 2001, and it ranked eighth in the 2022 Sight and Sound poll, as reported by the Associated Press in 2025. Those honors offer context, not a formula for this list: it takes the top spot because its formal experimentation, emotional impact, atmosphere, and thematic depth reinforce one another with exceptional precision.

Where should you start with David Lynch?

  • For the clearest entry point: Start with Blue Velvet. Its mystery is legible, while its unsettling view of suburbia introduces Lynch’s tonal contrast.
  • For emotional storytelling: Choose The Straight Story for a gentle, direct journey, or The Elephant Man for a compassionate period drama.
  • For Lynch at his most widely acclaimed: Watch Mulholland Dr. when you are ready for a film that changes meaning as it goes.
  • For uncompromising surrealism: Try Eraserhead for concentrated atmosphere or Inland Empire for a longer, more fragmented immersion.
  • If you know the television series: Approach Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me as Laura’s story, not as a conventional continuation of the show’s mystery.

Why this ranking is subjective

There is no authoritative ordering of exactly these ten features. The Guardian published a 2025 ranking that combines films and television projects, so it is one critic’s argument rather than a definitive list of Lynch’s ten features. Awards and poll placements show how particular institutions and voters have valued individual works; they cannot settle comparisons between a grounded road story, a studio adaptation, and Lynch’s most fractured experiments.

David Lynch died on January 16, 2025, according to the Television Academy. His ten features remain a remarkably varied body of work: ranking them requires deciding how much weight to give clarity, risk, emotional force, and atmosphere.
