But the sleeker oval belt, Ultimate Warrior’s yellow-strap variant and the Attitude Era look each have a distinct case. This ranking weighs silhouette and plate layout, strap color, logo treatment, on-screen identity and association with memorable champions. The order is an editorial judgment, not an official WWE ranking; it covers major designs and named variants, not every cosmetic or logo update.
What counts as a distinct design?
The Intercontinental Championship dates to September 1979, but the title’s history is not the same as the history of its belts. WWE’s title-history page documents the championship lineage and notable holders; it is not a complete catalog of belt designs.
This ranking treats a substantial change in plate silhouette, layout or overall logo treatment as a separate design. Strap color can create a meaningful visual variant without making the underlying plates a wholly different design. The sources establish several major looks, but not a definitive inventory of every update.
How the ranking works
- Shape and layout: whether the main plate and side plates feel balanced and recognizable.
- Strap and logo: how color and lettering contribute to the belt’s identity.
- On-screen distinction: whether the design reads clearly as an Intercontinental title rather than a generic championship belt.
- Era and champions: the strength of its association with wrestlers and periods fans remember.
Visual identity and historical influence carry the most weight. Nostalgia matters, but it does not automatically put an older design first.

The major Intercontinental Championship belt designs, ranked
1. The classic design on a white strap
The classic design is the best all-around Intercontinental belt: its distinctive plate layout is easy to recognize, and its return gave the championship a strong visual link to earlier eras. WWE says Cody Rhodes reinstated this look at Hell in a Cell in 2011 after disposing of the sleeker oval belt. The restored design has remained on a white strap, according to WWE’s feature on belt maker Dave Millican.
Its associations reach back to champions including Ricky Steamboat, Rick Rude and Mr. Perfect. The white strap makes the gold-colored plates stand out, though it can show wear: Millican noted that it attracts scuff marks. Its enduring, comparatively simple look is the point; it does not need a dramatic logo treatment to be identifiable.
2. The classic design on Ultimate Warrior’s yellow strap
This is a strap variant of the classic design, not a wholly separate plate design. The yellow strap worn by Ultimate Warrior in the late 1980s changes the belt’s entire impression: it is louder and more immediately tied to Warrior than the white version. WWE’s feature quotes Millican saying the yellow version remains popular among collectors and “makes it look like a whole different belt.”
That visual impact earns it a separate place in the ranking, even though the underlying design belongs with the classic belt. It is the strongest example of how strap color alone can reshape a title’s identity.
Rank #2
- Championship Quality: This wrestling belt is designed for professional-level competitions, featuring a heavyweight 2mm brass construction for durability.
- Replica: Wing Eagle Wrestling Championship belt replica can fix every one.
- Adult Sizing: With an adjustable length, this belt can accommodate most adult wrestlers and fits waist sizes up to 42 inches.
- Impressive Display: Whether worn during matches or showcased as a prized possession, this belt makes a bold statement.
- Durable Materials: Crafted with high-quality brass and genuine leather, this belt is built to withstand the rigors of intense wrestling action.
3. The sleeker oval design
WWE says Dave Millican was commissioned to create this Intercontinental belt in 2008. Its sleeker oval look gave the championship a more contemporary silhouette than the classic design it replaced. It is a clear, deliberate redesign, but it has less of the classic belt’s historical continuity and visual distinction.
Cody Rhodes’s 2011 return to the earlier design gave the oval belt a comparatively short chapter in the championship’s story. That does not make it unsuccessful: it remains the most recognizable alternative for viewers who associate the title with its modern oval-era presentation.
4. The Attitude Era design
WWE Shop lists an Attitude Era Intercontinental replica, establishing it as a recognizable period design. It represents a different visual chapter from both the classic look and the later oval belt, and its era gives it a strong identity for fans who connect the title with that period.
The available sources do not provide enough detailed specifications to make a reliable plate-by-plate comparison with the other designs. It ranks below them here because its documented design details and direct links to particular champions are less clear, not because the era itself lacked memorable titleholders.
Rank #3
- Brass gold plated
- Adult Size
- Good Quality from "GRD SPORTS"
5. The 1985–1987 red-logo version
WWE Shop also lists a replica identified as the 1985–1987 design, described as recreating that era’s proportions, plate layout, finish and strap details. Its red-logo treatment gives it a distinct period identity within the broader history of Intercontinental belts.
It is a specific, collectible-looking era rather than a design whose merits can be fully established from the available description alone. That makes it harder to place above the more clearly documented classic and oval designs. The ranking is about the major looks supported here, not a claim that this version was unimportant.

WWE Shop search results have featured replicas of the current Intercontinental title, the Attitude Era version and the 1985–1987 belt. The listings are useful starting points if you want a particular era, but stock and product availability can change.
- Current Intercontinental Championship replica
- Attitude Era Intercontinental Championship replica
- 1985–1987 Intercontinental Championship replica
For a marketplace purchase, check that the listing identifies the precise design, the seller and the licensing details. In an August 30, 2022 announcement, WWE said it and Amazon had filed joint suits against 13 defendants accused of marketing inauthentic WWE-branded championship belts, including Intercontinental designs: WWE’s announcement on counterfeiters. That action is a reason to verify a listing, not proof that any particular marketplace offer is counterfeit.
Why the classic belt remains the benchmark
The classic design wins because it balances a distinctive silhouette with a visual identity that survives changes in champions and eras. The oval belt is the clearest modern alternative, while Warrior’s yellow strap shows how a variant can become memorable without replacing the underlying plates. For the championship’s full lineage, use WWE’s title-history page; for its major looks, the classic-to-oval-to-classic sequence is the clearest documented through-line.
