Is Average Joe worth watching? Kristen Baldwin’s Yahoo Entertainment review says yes if you want a fast-moving crime thriller that mixes graphic violence with dark comedy and family drama. Her main caution is substantial: torture scenes and frequent, sometimes graphic violence make this a poor fit for squeamish viewers.
What is Average Joe about?
The BET crime drama follows Joe Washington (Deon Cole), a Pittsburgh plumber whose life changes after his father Teddy dies. Joe learns that Teddy had ties to the Russian mob and stole $10 million and a Lamborghini. Paramount+’s official episode guide gives that theft as the series’ first-episode hook.
The danger reaches Joe’s family directly: his daughter Jennifer is dating Dimitri, the son of a Russian mobster. Joe, his best friend Leon (Malcolm Barrett), and his friend Touch, a police officer, become caught up in the effort to find the money and protect those close to them.
What makes the show different?
The appeal is the collision of crime suspense, dark humor, and family drama. In Baldwin’s interpretation, Joe and Leon first imagine what the stolen money might mean for them, then find themselves making increasingly desperate choices. Their circle of family and friends gets pulled into a caper where danger and moral compromises keep compounding.

Baldwin describes the result as an “inventive blend of hair-raising crime thriller suspense, dark humor, and thorny family drama.” That tonal mix is the show’s central proposition: it can be tense and brutal without giving up its comic edge.
How violent is Average Joe?
Violence is not an occasional exception to the tone. Baldwin warns that it is frequent and graphic, and says several torture scenes approach gratuitousness. Her blunt summary is: “This show is not for the squeamish.” If torture or graphic violence is a deal-breaker, the humor and family elements may not offset that content.

What does the review praise—and what is its verdict?
Baldwin highlights the ensemble, particularly Malcolm Barrett as the affable Leon and Cynthia Kaye McWilliams as the quick-witted Cathy. She also praises Deon Cole for a compelling dramatic turn as Joe, a role that puts him at the center of the series’ shift from ordinary family concerns to criminal peril.
Her overall grade is B+. That is one critic’s assessment, not a consensus rating; the review’s strongest recommendation is for viewers who enjoy darkly funny crime stories and can tolerate explicit violence.
