Atlanta police announced arrest warrants for Christopher Spencer on May 31, 2018, in connection with the 2016 killing of 19-year-old Bridget Shiel. A Fulton County grand jury indicted him on murder and related charges in 2019. Those steps were accusations, not a conviction: the sources reviewed do not establish a verdict finding Spencer guilty of Shiel’s killing.
What happened to Bridget Shiel?
Shiel, 19, was found dead at Oakland City Park in southwest Atlanta on May 31, 2016. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that she had multiple gunshot wounds. The AJC’s account of the case documents the discovery and later investigation.
Police accounts of where she was killed developed over time. Early reports considered whether her body had been left in the park. By June 11, 2016, police said they believed she had been shot there, citing a 911 report of gunshots at about 1:06 a.m. and witness information about her movements earlier that night. WSB-TV reported that evolving police account; FOX 5 Atlanta also covered the evidence.
How did investigators connect Christopher Spencer to the case?
In June 2016, police described a witness seeing Shiel in the passenger seat of her car with two men at a gas station near Memorial Drive and Rockbridge Road late on May 30. She appeared distressed, according to reporting on the police account. The witness report and later account of gunfire helped investigators outline the final hours before her death; neither, by itself, established who killed her.

The investigation later turned to forensic evidence. The AJC reported that investigators recovered a Sprite can and Shiel’s clothes in January 2017, and that Spencer’s DNA was found on the can. According to the paper, investigators connected him to the case after his DNA profile was entered into CODIS. WSB-TV separately reported detectives’ account that DNA traces were found on a Sprite bottle, clothing, and Shiel.
These are investigative details reported by news outlets, not findings from a trial specific to Shiel’s killing. DNA evidence was central to the public account of the arrest, but it should not be treated as a court determination of guilt in this case.

When was Spencer arrested and indicted?
| Date | Reported development | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| May 31, 2018 | Atlanta police announced arrest warrants for Spencer, who was already imprisoned for separate crimes. WSB-TV reported the announcement. | A warrant and arrest allegation are not a finding of guilt. |
| March 2019 | The AJC reported that a Fulton County grand jury indicted Spencer on murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery, hijacking a motor vehicle, and gun charges related to Shiel’s death. The AJC summarized the indictment. | An indictment formally accuses a person of crimes; it is not a conviction. |
After police announced the warrants, Shiel’s mother, Angela, told WSB-TV: “I’m still extremely sad, but I feel relief.” WSB-TV’s interview also reflected the family’s unanswered questions.
Was Spencer convicted of killing Bridget Shiel?
The sources reviewed do not establish a conviction specifically for Shiel’s killing. A LegalClarity article published April 1, 2026, says the Shiel-related charges did not proceed to a separate trial and that no verdict was returned in her case. That is a secondary account, not an official docket record; the current status of the charges has not been independently confirmed here. LegalClarity’s account of the reported disposition should therefore be read with that limitation.
Spencer was convicted in a separate DeKalb County case involving the murders of Samuel White and Sylvia Watson. The Supreme Court of Georgia affirmed those convictions on May 4, 2020, in Spencer v. The State, S20A0871. Those convictions concern different victims and a different case; they do not establish guilt in the Shiel matter.

The AJC reported in May 2019 that police had not released a motive and had previously said they did not believe the killing was gang-related. The paper also reported that Spencer denied knowing Shiel or having contact with her. The AJC’s report does not resolve why Shiel was killed. No motive should be inferred from the reported DNA evidence, the witness account, or Spencer’s unrelated convictions.
