For most Netflix subscribers, Premium is worth paying for only if you will use its 4K/HDR playback, four simultaneous streams, or listed spatial-audio feature. U.S. prices shown on Netflix pages on August 18, 2026, were $26.99 a month for Premium, $19.99 for Standard, and $8.99 for Standard with ads. Premium therefore costs $7 more per month than Standard—$84 over 12 months—or $18 more per month than the ad-supported plan.
If you mainly want ad-free viewing on a 1080p screen, Standard is the more practical choice. If low cost matters more than avoiding ads, Standard with ads is the value option, provided its device, casting, and title restrictions work for you. Netflix prices and available plans can vary by billing arrangement and change over time, so check the total shown on your own account before switching.

Netflix plan comparison: price, video, streams, and ads
The figures below are U.S. prices observed on Netflix pages on August 18, 2026. Annual totals are the monthly prices multiplied by 12; they exclude taxes, promotional offers, partner-billing differences, and future price changes. Netflix’s public pages have also displayed older price figures, so the price on your account or signup screen is the one to rely on.

For the observed prices, Standard costs $132 more per year than Standard with ads. Premium costs $84 more per year than Standard and $216 more than Standard with ads. Those totals make the trade-off easier to judge than the monthly difference alone.
What Premium adds for the extra $7 over Standard
4K and HDR eligibility
Netflix lists Premium as its 4K + HDR tier. 4K means a higher-resolution picture; HDR can expand brightness and color range when the title and equipment support it. A Premium subscription does not make every title 4K or HDR, and HDR formats such as Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HDR10+ are not interchangeable guarantees. Playback depends on the specific title, plan, display, device, connection, HDMI path, and settings. Netflix’s Ultra HD and HDR requirements describe those dependencies.
Four simultaneous streams
Premium allows up to four devices to watch at the same time, compared with two on either lower tier. This can matter when people in one household often watch different programs concurrently. It is a concurrency benefit, not permission for unlimited sharing outside the household.

Spatial audio
Netflix lists spatial audio with Premium. Whether it makes a noticeable difference depends on the title and compatible playback equipment; the plan alone cannot create a home-theater effect on every device or program.

Nor does Netflix position Premium as a larger-catalog tier. The ad-supported plan has most of Netflix’s titles, although a small number can be unavailable because of licensing.
Is Premium worth it compared with Standard?
At the prices observed, the decision is whether 4K/HDR eligibility, four simultaneous streams, or spatial audio is worth another $7 each month. Standard already provides ad-free viewing, 1080p, two simultaneous streams, and downloads. If those are enough, choosing Premium buys features you may not use rather than a better version of the same basic ad-free experience.

- Choose Premium if you regularly watch supported titles on a compatible 4K/HDR setup, need three or four simultaneous streams, or value the listed audio feature with compatible equipment.
- Choose Standard if you want to avoid ads but mostly watch on a 1080p TV, laptop, tablet, or phone, or if two simultaneous streams are sufficient.
A 4K television by itself is not a reason to upgrade: the rest of the playback chain and your usual viewing habits matter too. If you cannot reliably watch in 4K, Premium’s principal picture-quality distinction may go unused.
Is Standard with ads a better deal than Standard?
At the observed U.S. prices, Standard with ads saves $11 a month, or $132 over a year, compared with Standard. Both list 1080p, two simultaneous devices, downloads, and up to five profiles. The savings are meaningful if you accept commercial breaks and the ad tier’s limitations; they are not a like-for-like substitute for ad-free Standard.

What you give up on the ad-supported plan
- Ads can appear before and during selected shows and movies. Netflix describes them as short and limited; a fixed average ad load is not established here.
- You cannot fast-forward or skip while an ad is playing.
- A small number of titles may be locked because of licensing restrictions.
- Some older devices are incompatible, and Netflix says casting or mirroring a mobile device to a TV is unavailable on the ad-supported experience.
- Extra members cannot be added to an ad-supported plan.
Netflix says Kids profiles do not show ads. See its ad-plan details and device compatibility and casting guidance before downgrading, especially if you rely on an older TV device or phone-to-TV playback.

How to decide which Netflix plan fits
- Need three or four people to stream at once? Premium is the only listed plan with four simultaneous devices. If two is enough, continue comparing the lower tiers.
- Have a compatible 4K/HDR setup and watch supported titles on it? Consider Premium. If not, 4K/HDR eligibility is unlikely to be useful.
- Do you want ad-free viewing? Standard provides it without Premium’s additional $7 monthly charge at the observed prices.
- Comfortable with ads and the ad tier’s restrictions? Standard with ads is the lowest-priced option in this comparison.
- Need to add someone outside your household? The ad-supported tier does not allow extra members. Standard or Premium may allow them, subject to country, billing arrangement, and package-provider rules.
- Rely on downloads across several devices? Downloads are included, but Netflix applies plan-based device limits. Check the limit shown for your plan rather than assuming a particular allowance.
- Does the annual difference justify the feature you need? Compare the $84 Premium-over-Standard or $216 Premium-over-ad-plan annualized difference with your actual use.
What a 4K or HDR setup needs
Netflix’s guidance cites a steady connection of about 15 Mbps or higher for Ultra HD on supported devices. That is a service recommendation, not a guarantee that every connection will sustain 4K playback. In general, you need:
- A plan that supports Ultra HD.
- A compatible 4K television or display and a compatible Netflix app or streaming device.
- A supported HDMI connection and copy-protection path when using an external device.
- A title available in Ultra HD; HDR additionally requires a compatible title and supported HDR format throughout the playback chain.
- Playback quality set to Auto or High where the setting is available.
- A sufficiently stable internet connection.
Netflix also provides guidance for another supported device family at its 4K/HDR requirements page. To check whether Premium’s formats are being used, look for the title’s Ultra HD, HDR, Dolby Vision, or spatial-audio indicator and confirm the device, display, HDMI port, and playback settings support it. This is a compatibility check, not a guarantee that all titles will show every indicator.

Simultaneous screens are not account-sharing permission
The plan’s device count describes how many devices can watch at the same time. Netflix defines a Netflix Household around the main place where the service is watched and says accounts should not be shared outside that household. Extra-member eligibility and charges vary by country and billing arrangement; check your account rather than assuming Premium makes outside-household sharing available. Details are in Netflix’s household and extra-member guidance.

Download limits are plan-specific
Downloads are included across the listed tiers, but the number of devices that can hold downloads is limited by plan. Netflix documents download-device limits in its download help information; check the current plan details if that limit is driving your choice.
Partner billing can change the available choices
A subscription bundled with a mobile, cable, or other package may show different prices, available tiers, plan-change rules, or extra-member options than direct Netflix billing. Netflix says the package provider can affect the plan available; see package-provider plan information and partner plan changes and extra members.
How to check your price, change plans, or cancel
Verify the price you will actually pay
- Sign in to Netflix and open the account or membership page.
- Choose the plan-change or plan-comparison option.
- Check the displayed price, billing method, available plans, and any package restrictions.
- Review whether taxes or third-party billing affect the total before confirming.
Netflix says members can change plans or cancel online, while package subscribers may need to manage the subscription through their provider. See Netflix’s account, plan-change, and cancellation instructions.
Check ad-tier compatibility on a TV device
- Open Netflix and go to the home screen.
- Press the remote’s back button.
- Choose Get Help, then Plan Compatibility.
- If Plan Compatibility is not available, Netflix says that device cannot be used with an ad-supported experience.
Best plan by household
- One person watching casually: Standard with ads if commercials and restrictions are acceptable; otherwise Standard. Premium is hard to justify without a 4K/HDR or audio use case.
- A couple sharing two screens: Standard with ads is the lower-cost fit if both tolerate ads; Standard is the ad-free alternative.
- A household that routinely uses three or four screens at once: Premium addresses the simultaneous-stream need.
- A 4K home-theater viewer: Premium is the tier to consider, provided the title, display, device chain, connection, and sound equipment support the features you value.
- A frequent traveler or downloader: Compare the device limit for downloads on your actual plan before upgrading; downloads alone do not establish that Premium is necessary.
- A partner-billed subscriber: Check the provider’s plan options and total before making a comparison based on direct Netflix prices.
This comparison uses Netflix’s listed U.S. plan descriptions and help guidance, not independent laboratory picture or sound testing. The recommendation is an inference from those listed features: Premium is worthwhile when you will use them, not simply because it is the highest tier.
