Spoilers for Stranger Things Season 5, Episode 7: Will Byers’s sexuality is confirmed on screen. He comes out to his friends and family, ending the ambiguity that shaped earlier seasons and pre-release coverage.
What Will says in Season 5, Episode 7
In Episode 7, Will tells the people closest to him: “I haven’t told any of you this because I don’t want you to see me differently. But the truth is, I am different. I don’t like girls. I mean, I do. Just not like you guys do. I had this crush on someone, even though I know they’re not like me.” Netflix’s official recap describes the moment directly: “At long last, Will Byers has come out and shed the shame and fear he felt about hiding his identity.”
Why older coverage called it unconfirmed
Before Season 5, the show had not explicitly confirmed Will’s sexuality in dialogue. In a 2022 Variety interview, Noah Schnapp said the question had previously been left “up to the audience’s interpretation.” He also explained that he avoided giving a direct answer because he did not want to reveal where the remaining Season 4 story was headed. That interview reflected the story as it stood then, not the final season’s answer.
How Season 5 resolves Will’s arc
Netflix’s interview about the Episode 7 scene identifies it as Will’s coming-out moment. Ross Duffer said the scene had been in development for a long time and connected Will’s acceptance of himself to his confidence going into the final battle: “Once he’s able to do that, he’s heading into this final battle with a confidence and maturity that he hasn’t had before.” In Netflix’s final-season retrospective, the company says Will comes to terms with his sexuality and, by embracing his authentic self, discovers he can accomplish more than he imagined.

Does this confirm Will has feelings for Mike?
Will’s speech mentions a crush on someone who is not like him, but the quoted dialogue does not name that person. Schnapp said in the 2022 Variety interview that Will had feelings for Mike; that was an earlier interview statement, distinct from what Will explicitly says in the Episode 7 speech. The clearest on-screen confirmation in the scene is that Will is gay and has experienced a crush.

Netflix’s official media center described Season 5 as the fifth and final season, released in three parts: four episodes on November 26, three on Christmas, and the finale on New Year’s Eve at 5 p.m. PT. Netflix’s May 14, 2026 retrospective refers to the series as having ended its run. The “not confirmed” framing belongs to the period before the final season’s reveal; it no longer describes the completed story.
