Alfred Hitchcock’s only completed 3D film was Dial M for Murder (1954), adapted from Frederick Knott’s stage play. Hitchcock began shooting it on August 5, 1953, using Warner Bros.’ All-Media camera rig. The film was photographed in 3D, but audiences did not always see it that way: as interest in 3D faded, theaters increasingly screened the flat 2D version.
Why Hitchcock made a 3D film
Dial M for Murder emerged during the early-1950s 3D boom, following the success of films including Bwana Devil (1952) and House of Wax (1953). Warner Bros. required Hitchcock to shoot the film in 3D, according to the BFI. The Academy says Hitchcock used the studio optical department’s All-Media rig to explore stereoscopic techniques.

AFI describes the production as Hitchcock’s only Natural Vision film and notes that stereoscopic photography limited camera placement and angles. The rig used a two-projector 3D process, as outlined in the AFI Catalog. Those constraints made the film a distinctive experiment in adapting Hitchcock’s visual style to depth photography.
Was Dial M for Murder released in 3D or 2D?
It was shot in 3D, but its original theatrical exhibition included both stereoscopic and flat 2D screenings. The Academy notes that 2D presentations had surpassed 3D screenings by 1954. AFI’s account of the Philadelphia premiere illustrates the change: the film opened in 3D at the Randolph Theatre on May 18, 1954, and general audiences saw 3D on May 19, but the theatre switched to a flat print that evening and used 2D for later showings.

Warner Bros. also dropped its earlier policy requiring first-run 3D screenings as the fad waned, according to AFI. So it is inaccurate to assume that every audience watching the film in 1954 saw it in 3D.
How 3D shaped the scissors murder scene
The most memorable demonstration of the film’s stereoscopic photography comes during the struggle in which Grace Kelly reaches toward the audience for a pair of scissors. The BFI points to that moment as a striking use of the format. AFI reports that Hitchcock spent a week filming the stabbing scene to get the 3D effect he wanted.
The staging is especially notable because much of the story takes place in a single London flat, reflecting the play’s theatrical origins. Hitchcock’s approach was to emphasize those theatrical qualities rather than continually move the action outdoors. In an interview passage reproduced by Turner Classic Movies, Hitchcock said he tried to avoid going outside, with brief exceptions when the inspector needed to verify something, and described emphasizing “the theatrical aspects.”
