Snoopy first flew above the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1968 as the Flying Ace. Since then, Macy’s has documented a succession of costumes—from astronaut and ice-skater to Millennium Snoopy and Beagle Scout—created in collaboration between its Parade Studio and the Peanuts team. The public record offers a dated design history and one detailed set of dimensions, but not a technical blueprint of how the balloon is made.
How Snoopy became a recurring parade balloon
Macy’s says Snoopy made his parade debut in 1968, and its Parade Archives identifies that first balloon as the Flying Ace. The character returned in later years wearing different costumes, turning Snoopy’s parade appearances into a series of distinct versions rather than one unchanging design.
The count depends on when Macy’s reported it. In its 2013 announcement, Macy’s called the upcoming appearance Snoopy’s 37th flight and said he had appeared in seven versions. In 2019, it described the astronaut redesign as the eighth version and reported a 40th flight. The 2024 lineup called Beagle Scout Snoopy the ninth version. Those are dated snapshots; they do not establish a total number of versions or flights through 2026.
Snoopy’s documented balloon designs
Macy’s announcements provide a useful timeline, but not a complete year-by-year catalog. The periods below reflect the years specified in the releases.

| Years or date | Documented design | What Macy’s says |
|---|---|---|
| 1968 | Flying Ace | Macy’s identifies this as Snoopy’s parade debut and the first Snoopy balloon. |
| 1969–1977 | Astronaut | Macy’s identifies an astronaut version during this period. |
| 1978–1985 | Flying Ace | The Flying Ace persona returned. |
| 1986–1987 | Ice-skater | Macy’s describes an ice-skater design. |
| 1988–1994 | Ice-skater with Woodstock | Macy’s distinguishes a later ice-skater version shown with Woodstock. |
| 1999–2001 | Millennium Snoopy | A celebratory version marked the turn of the millennium. |
| 2006–2011 | Flying Ace | The Flying Ace returned again. |
| 2013–2015 | Snoopy with Woodstock | Macy’s says the pair took holiday flights together during this period. |
| 2019 | Astronaut Snoopy | The redesign marked 50 years since the Apollo 11 moon landing and recalled Snoopy’s first astronaut appearance in the 1969 parade. Macy’s called it the eighth version and reported Snoopy’s 40th flight. |
| 2023/2024 | Beagle Scout Snoopy | The 2024 lineup said this iteration celebrated the Beagle Scouts’ 50th anniversary and called it the ninth version. |
The version count is not perfectly reconcilable from these announcements alone: Macy’s called the 2019 astronaut the eighth version, then called Beagle Scout Snoopy the ninth in its 2024 lineup. The releases do not explain how the versions are counted, so the figures are best kept attached to their publication dates.
Who designs the Snoopy balloon?
Macy’s says artists from its Parade Studio collaborate with the Peanuts team on Snoopy balloon designs. The Parade Studio is described in Macy’s parade materials as a design and production facility staffed by creative and technical specialists. Those materials do not identify which individuals specifically engineered or fabricated Snoopy’s balloon.
The collaboration is a documented part of the design story: a character whose parade appearance changes with each persona is developed with input from both Macy’s parade operation and the Peanuts team. Macy’s 2019 producer Jordan Dabby described Snoopy’s place in the event this way: “Snoopy flying in the Macy’s Parade has become a tradition that fans from all over the world expect and have loved to enjoy for more than four decades,” Macy’s said in its 2019 announcement.
How big was Beagle Scout Snoopy?
Macy’s 2024 parade lineup listed Beagle Scout Snoopy at 42 feet long, 34 feet wide and 55 feet tall. These are specifications for that lineup’s version, not permanent dimensions for every Snoopy balloon.

Macy’s also said the giant scout hat was as long as 17 beagles lined up end to end. That is a promotional comparison supplied by Macy’s, not a separately documented measurement of beagles.
What is known—and not known—about construction?
The public-facing Macy’s sources establish who collaborates on the designs and provide dimensions for the 2024 version. They do not specify Snoopy’s fabric composition, helium volume, weight, anchoring design, handler count or a step-by-step fabrication process. Without Snoopy-specific documentation, those technical details should not be inferred from general accounts of parade balloons.

Why do the flight counts differ?
The numbers describe different moments in Macy’s announcements, not one timeless total: the 2013 release reported a 37th flight and seven versions; the 2019 release reported a 40th flight and eight versions; and the 2024 lineup called Beagle Scout Snoopy the ninth version. The sources do not provide a complete accounting that would support calculating an appearance total through 2026.
