Yes. Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours is a dramatization of climber Aron Ralston’s real 2003 ordeal in a remote Utah canyon: after a boulder pinned his right hand, he remained trapped for five nights, freed himself, and was eventually rescued. The broad events are documented in Ralston’s account and contemporary reporting; the film’s scenes should not be treated as a documentary record.
What happened to Aron Ralston?
In a CBS News interview feature, Ralston said he was 27 when he set out alone in southeast Utah on April 26, 2003, without telling anyone where he was going. He described pulling loose a large rock that fell and trapped his right hand against the canyon wall. Ralston characterized it as “like, 800-pound”; that is his estimate in the interview, not a separately established measurement.

Ralston had not planned to spend the night in the canyon. The CBS account says he remained trapped for five nights—127 hours by the reported account—before freeing himself. He then descended a 60-foot cliff and hiked seven miles before a helicopter rescued him. The account says his mother had initiated a search. These chronology and rescue details come from the interview reporting, rather than an independently verified rescue record in the sources cited here.
How closely does the film follow the real account?
The studio presents 127 Hours as an incredible true story and describes its central premise: a man becomes pinned by a boulder and must find a way to save himself. Director Danny Boyle said the crew filmed for a week in the real canyon, then recreated it in a converted furniture factory in Salt Lake City. He said the filmmakers “stuck very closely to the facts.” That describes the production’s stated approach; it does not verify every scene, line, or interaction as literal history.

The film is therefore best understood as a dramatic rendering of a real survival story. Ralston’s recollection and reporting establish the central incident and broad outcome. A particular moment shown on screen should be treated as dramatization unless a source specifically confirms it. The Guardian’s contemporaneous feature notes Ralston’s emotional response to the film’s helicopter rescue sequence and its connection to his mother’s part in starting the search.
What is 127 Hours?
127 Hours is a 2010 drama directed by Boyle, written by Boyle and Simon Beaufoy, and starring James Franco as Ralston. 20th Century Studios lists the film’s release date as November 5, 2010, and its runtime as 1 hour 33 minutes. The title refers to the reported duration of Ralston’s ordeal, not a stopwatch-verified measurement.

Where to read Ralston’s account
Ralston’s memoir, Between a Rock and a Hard Place, is the natural next read for a first-person account. The CBS interview feature discusses the book, but current editions and retailer availability are not established here.
