Enterprise in season 5, episode 5, “Mirrors.” A dedication plaque explains the ship’s crew’s escape attempt and gives Burnham and Book a clue to what happened to the vessel. The “57-year” span is the gap between the two episodes’ original broadcast years—not an established measure of time aboard the ship.
What happened to the I.S.S. Enterprise?
In “Mirrors,” Burnham and Book encounter the Mirror Universe ship in extradimensional space and examine its dedication plaque. As recounted in StarTrek.com’s official episode recap, the plaque describes a Terran High Chancellor who was killed while trying to reform the Empire. The Enterprise crew then mutinied and attempted to ferry refugees from the Mirror Universe into the Prime Universe.
The plaque’s account says the fleeing crew received help from a Kelpien slave who had become a rebel leader. Burnham infers that the crew escaped after the Enterprise became trapped in the aperture. The episode thus supplies the ship’s fate as the characters find it, along with the political circumstances behind the crew’s flight.
What does the dedication plaque say?
The plaque’s inscription is: “Light of hope shines through even the darkest of nights.” The official recap quotes the words but does not name an author or speaker. In context, the inscription sits alongside the account of the mutiny and refugee rescue attempt.

Why is it called a 57-year-old mystery?
The figure describes broadcast history: the Original Series episode “Mirror, Mirror” aired in 1967, and Discovery’s “Mirrors” was released in 2024. Paramount+ lists “Mirrors” as season 5, episode 5, released April 25, 2024. Its episode listing says Burnham and Book face enemies and uncover a deadly threat to Discovery.
That 57-year interval is not the Enterprise’s in-universe time in the aperture. The official recap establishes Burnham’s inference about the crew’s flight, but does not give an exact duration of the ship’s entrapment or a complete sequence of in-universe dates.

How “Mirrors” extends the Enterprise’s story
The episode connects the original Mirror Universe story to a later chapter by revealing what the Enterprise crew tried to do after the Terran Empire’s upheaval. StarTrek.com’s franchise feature places the ship’s journey within the wider history of the I.S.S. Enterprise across Star Trek. “Mirrors” makes that history concrete through the plaque and Burnham’s reading of the ship’s predicament, rather than by assigning a precise in-universe date to its disappearance.
