What Musk and Rogan said about MSNBC
In November 2024, Donald Trump Jr. tagged Musk in a social-media post suggesting he buy MSNBC. Musk responded, “How much does it cost?” according to Yahoo Entertainment’s November 25, 2024 report. Rogan then joked, “If you buy MSNBC I would like Rachael Maddow’s job.” The reported spelling was “Rachael.”
Those remarks were a public exchange about a hypothetical purchase, not evidence of negotiations, a formal bid, or a threat to acquire the network. The reported wording comes from secondary coverage; the original posts are not independently established here.
Was MSNBC for sale?
No individual sale was announced. On November 20, 2024, Comcast said it planned to create a new publicly traded company from selected NBCUniversal cable networks and related digital assets, including MSNBC. A spin-off and a sale are different transactions. In a spin-off, a company separates assets into a new business, generally for its existing shareholders; in a sale, an asset is transferred to a buyer. The distinction matters here: the announced plan concerned a portfolio of properties, not an offer to sell MSNBC to Musk.

What happened to MSNBC after the speculation?
The separation ultimately went ahead. Versant’s separation from Comcast was completed on January 2, 2026. An SEC filing identifies the network formerly known as MSNBC as MS NOW and includes it in Versant’s business: Versant’s SEC filing.
That 2026 change was the completion of the corporate separation—not a Musk acquisition. The network was rebranded MS NOW, effective November 2025, and became part of Versant.

How large was the planned spin-off?
Comcast reported approximately $7 billion in revenue for the planned spin-off portfolio over the 12 months ended September 30, 2024. That figure covered the portfolio as a whole, not MSNBC alone; Comcast’s release does not establish MSNBC’s individual revenue in that figure.
