How Strands hints work
Strands is played on a reported six-across by eight-down grid. Neighboring letters can connect horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, and the reported rules say each letter is used. Theme words fill the board without overlapping. The spangram describes the theme and touches two opposite sides.
According to the secondary reports, finding three non-theme words of at least four letters earns an in-game hint that highlights the next answer’s letters, but not their connection order. A further hint can reveal the word letter by letter. These mechanics are reported by Yahoo Tech and AOL/Parade; an accessible primary NYT rules page was not available to confirm them.
