NAZA, a documentary critical of Israeli military targeting practices in Gaza, screened at the 2026 Mill Valley Film Festival. Protests were reported at screenings in New York and Sag Harbor, but the available reporting does not confirm that protesters gathered at the Mill Valley venue. The distinction matters: a report that a Bay Area action was expected is not evidence that it happened.
What is NAZA about?
Directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, NAZA examines Israeli military systems used to select bombing targets in Gaza. The Mill Valley Film Festival described the film as being shot at night on Tel Aviv rooftops and drawing on testimony from more than twenty Israeli intelligence officers and soldiers who designed or operated those systems. The festival said the film builds on reporting by The Guardian, +972 Magazine and Local Call. The festival listing called it a West Coast premiere. (Mill Valley Film Festival)

The Associated Press described 24 Israeli military insiders as appearing in the documentary. Their accounts include allegations that AI-assisted tools helped identify potential Hamas targets and that personnel knew attacks could kill many civilians. Those are allegations represented in the film, not findings independently established by the film alone.
What does the Israeli military say?
The Israeli military disputes the filmmakers’ findings. The Associated Press reported that the military acknowledged using AI to help identify targets, while saying a human makes the final decision before a strike. The film’s interviewees, the filmmakers’ interpretation, and the military’s stated position are distinct accounts; the reporting cited here does not adjudicate them. (Associated Press)

Political criticism is also separate from an assessment of the film’s evidence. AP reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called NAZA antisemitic and that Culture Minister Miki Zohar called for the directors’ citizenship to be stripped. AP also noted that some critics said the film lacked context while acknowledging they had not seen it. These are attributed reactions, not independent conclusions about the film’s accuracy. Where were protests reported?
Sag Harbor, New York
Israel National News reported that about 100 Jewish and Israeli-American community members protested outside Sag Harbor Cinema during a Hamptons International Film Festival screening on October 3, 2026. The outlet named the Israeli-American Council, East End Jews for Israel, the Jewish Center of the Hamptons and #EndJewHatred as co-organizers. It said the Israeli-American Council sought panels, survivor testimony and contextual materials at screenings. This estimate and event refer to Sag Harbor, not Mill Valley. (Israel National News)
New York Film Festival
The Associated Press reported that a few dozen protesters gathered outside the film’s premiere at the New York Film Festival the previous month, showing images of Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack. AP quoted Abraham acknowledging the massacre and saying it could not justify civilian killings in Gaza. This was a separate event from the Bay Area screenings. (Associated Press)
Mill Valley, California
The sources establish that NAZA was scheduled to screen in San Rafael, but they do not confirm a protest at the venue. The Sag Harbor report said Bay Area screenings were expected after that event; expectation is not confirmation of an action. The available reporting therefore leaves unresolved whether protesters gathered at either Mill Valley screening. (Israel National News)

The San Francisco Chronicle described the film as a controversial look at the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza and noted that the booking came during artistic director Rose Kuo’s first year leading festival programming. (San Francisco Chronicle)

Festival founder and director Mark Fishkin framed the film’s central question this way: “The most unsettling question NAZA raises is what happens when a people shaped by the memory of dehumanization begin, in pursuit of an enemy, to dehumanize others in turn.” That is Fishkin’s characterization of the film’s argument, not a verified conclusion about military conduct.
