The Candles From The Edge, directed by UGM doctoral student Aru Dewangga, follows an Indonesian farmers group working with integrated organic farming. Universitas Gadjah Mada reported on 6 October 2026 that the film had been selected to represent Indonesia in the Inspiring Asia Semi-Finals after becoming one of four finalists at the festival’s Indonesia regional event. UGM described a Grand Final appearance in Manila as a possibility, not a confirmed result.
What the documentary is about
The short documentary focuses on the Mulyo 1 Farmers Group in Gentungan Village and its integrated organic farming system. UGM says the film explores challenges facing the group: declining water and soil quality, high production costs, land degradation, and less interest among younger people in becoming farmers. UGM’s 6 October 2026 report describes both those pressures and the group’s farming and educational initiatives.
Who made it, and what farming practices it shows
The film was directed by Aru Dewangga, a doctoral student in Environmental Science at UGM’s Graduate School. UGM reports that the group makes organic fertilizer, prepares plant-based pesticides, uses renewable energy, and runs Rumah Tani, an educational tourism program for students. The university says these practices are intended to lower production costs and help preserve the environment; its reports do not present independent measurements of those effects.
Dewangga said the film is meant to connect farmers, academics, and the wider public in conversations about agriculture in Indonesia. The UGM report attributes that aim to the director.

What the festival recognition means
At the Inspiring Asia Micro Film Festival 2026 Regional Indonesia event, The Candles From The Edge was one of four finalists in the Best Project Award category. The regional screening and awards took place on 11 September 2026 at Ice Palace, Lotte Mall, Jakarta. UGM’s Directorate of Student Affairs reported that 11 works were presented at the event.
UGM later reported that the film was selected to represent Indonesia in the Inspiring Asia Semi-Finals. Its 6 October account says the film could appear at the Grand Final in Manila, Philippines. That is an opportunity described by UGM, not evidence that the film reached the Grand Final or won a final award. The Directorate’s 16 September 2026 report also describes advancement to the Semi-Final and the possibility of competing in Manila.
Where to watch the film
The UGM reports cited here do not identify a public viewing link, streaming service, or physical release for the documentary. They also do not establish the competition’s eventual Grand Final result.
