HBO renewed The Last of Us for Season 3 on April 9, 2025, before Season 2 premiered. HBO’s reported plan is to release it in 2027, but no exact premiere date is established. Season 3 is expected to shift much of its attention to Abby; Ellie is still expected to be part of the wider story, though how much of the season follows her has not been confirmed.
When is The Last of Us Season 3 coming out?
The latest reported timing is 2027. HBO and Max chief Casey Bloys told Variety in July 2025 that “The series is definitely planned for 2027,” according to the Los Angeles Times. That is a planned release year, not a confirmed premiere date.

The same June 2026 report said production began in March and was scheduled to continue through late November. That schedule does not establish when the season will premiere. HBO has not announced a Season 3 episode count or episode titles in the cited sources.
The Last of Us Season 3 renewal is confirmed
HBO announced the renewal on April 9, 2025, ahead of Season 2’s debut. The announcement confirms a third season, but it does not provide a synopsis, premiere date or details about how the story will be divided. HBO’s renewal announcement includes creator and executive producer Craig Mazin’s statement: “We look forward to continuing the story of THE LAST OF US with season three!”

Season 2 had seven episodes, according to HBO’s announcement; that number applies to Season 2, not the upcoming season.
What happens to Ellie in Season 3?
Spoilers for the Season 2 finale: The finale resets the timeline to Abby’s Seattle story. Reporting about the adaptation indicates that Season 3 is expected to foreground Abby, whose perspective becomes central to The Last of Us Part II. That is an expected direction, not an official Season 3 plot synopsis.

Ellie remains part of the broader story, but the available reporting does not establish how much of Season 3 will follow her or exactly where her next chapter will fall in the season. The series is based on Naughty Dog’s game franchise, and The Last of Us Part II, released in 2020, is source material for the continuing adaptation. That has not been definitively settled in the sources cited here. In 2025, Bloys said creator Craig Mazin was working out whether the story needed two more seasons or one longer season. A later GamesRadar report relayed Neil Druckmann’s view that Season 3 would wrap up the series, but that report is not an HBO confirmation of the show’s final-season status.

Druckmann, the game creator and former series co-showrunner, also said in a Washington Post interview, as quoted by GamesRadar in September 2026: “I wasn’t involved in shaping this season’s creative direction, and Naughty Dog did not have a creative role in the direction of this season,” The distinction matters: the game is the source material, but Naughty Dog’s involvement in the show’s creative direction should not be assumed. HBO has not confirmed in these sources whether Season 3 will be the last.
