Hints for Connections #918

Try each clue before moving to the next. The first points to a broad theme; the last offers a word from the group.

  1. A sporting event, or a route toward winning a tournament.
  2. Words meaning really big, massive or enormous.
  3. Slang for a questionable spot or an unsavory establishment.
  4. Think of possible meanings or associations of the letter C.

The 16 words

SEE, MONSTER, QUARTER, ONE HUNDRED, SEMI, CELSIUS, BUMPER, DUMP, JOINT, GIANT, FINAL, HOLE, TITANIC, QUALIFIER, DIVE, COLD.

Connections categories and answers

Spoilers: the four groups are below.

Color Category Words
Yellow Tournament rounds FINAL, QUALIFIER, QUARTER, SEMI
Green Enormous BUMPER, GIANT, MONSTER, TITANIC
Blue Disreputable establishment DIVE, DUMP, HOLE, JOINT
Purple What “C” might mean CELSIUS, COLD, ONE HUNDRED, SEE

Why the purple group fits

Each answer connects to C in a different way: Celsius is a temperature scale; cold can describe a C-grade; one hundred is represented by the Roman numeral C; and “see” is how the letter C is pronounced.
