Spoilers for all of Season 3. Arisu and Usagi survive the Joker tournament and return to the real world together. Arisu chooses life when the Watchman offers him a final choice; Usagi finds closure with her father and makes the same choice. The closing shot—a waitress in Los Angeles wearing an “Alice” name tag—suggests the Borderland story could extend beyond Japan, but it does not confirm a fourth season.
Why Arisu and Usagi return to Borderland
Season 3 picks up five years after the events of Season 2. Arisu and Usagi are married, but their memories of Borderland remain confused and fragmentary. Banda, now a Citizen, wants Arisu back to make the games more entertaining. He recruits Ryuji, a professor drawn to questions about the afterlife and the possibility of reaching a deceased research partner. Ryuji exploits Usagi’s grief over her father and draws her into a near-death experience.

When Usagi disappears, Arisu agrees to Ann’s plan to stop his heart briefly so he can enter Borderland and find her. There, his memories return and he realizes the Joker is the last card to clear.
What is the Joker tournament?
The Joker stage is a fixed-order tournament for former survivors. Its increasingly difficult games test quick thinking, cooperation, strength and the willingness to betray others. Arisu and Usagi compete in separate groups until the final challenge, called Possible Futures.

How Possible Futures works
Possible Futures takes place on a five-by-five grid of rooms. Dice determine how many people can pass through certain doors. Each player starts with 15 points; moving and waiting both cost points, and some rooms impose hidden penalties. The doors show possible futures in the real world, tempting players with individual outcomes while the game forces them to weigh those prospects against the group’s chance to escape.
Why the final game breaks down
The final challenge becomes a group effort under mounting pressure, then unravels. Tetsu enters a room with a point penalty he cannot afford and is eliminated. Arisu is left facing what appears to be a choice between returning to the real world and remaining in Borderland, while Usagi is in danger in floodwater. He abandons the safe route to reach her.
Who is the Watchman, and what does Arisu choose?
At the vortex, Arisu encounters Banda, who again tries to persuade him to become a Citizen. Before Banda can shoot Arisu, a laser kills him. A separate, mysterious figure—the Watchman—then offers Arisu a final card choice. In Marie Claire’s ending account, the Watchman calls himself “no more than a watchman, watching over the rift between life and death.” The scene does not establish that the Watchman is simply the Joker in human form.
Arisu chooses life. When the Watchman describes death as a place without pain, Arisu answers, “No more happiness, either.” Kento Yamazaki, who plays Arisu, later told Marie Claire: “I think that Arisu didn’t have any doubts at all. He was very clear about living.” That is Yamazaki’s interpretation of the character’s decision, not an official explanation of the show’s metaphysics.
How Usagi gets closure—and what happens to Ryuji
Usagi is swept toward the vortex with Ryuji. She sees her father on the mountain where he died. He tells her to live and be happy, giving her the closure she had been seeking. Usagi chooses to return; Ryuji ultimately lets her go and is lost to the vortex.
Arisu and Usagi reach safety and return to the real world. Tao Tsuchiya, who plays Usagi, told Marie Claire: “She had the resolve to build a true family with Arisu, and because of that, she had to confront her vulnerability and trauma.” Tsuchiya also described Usagi’s pregnancy as a major change in her emotional landscape.

Netflix’s ending explainer says the final-game survivors return to the real world except for Ryuji. Arisu and Usagi are expecting a child and talk about names. The epilogue points toward new lives for the other returning survivors, while Arisu works as a therapist and reconnects with people from earlier seasons. The ending’s resolution is not that life becomes free of pain or uncertainty; it is that the characters choose to live with both.
What does the Los Angeles ending mean?
After the Japanese characters’ epilogue, the show cuts to a bar in the United States as news reports earthquakes. A waitress’s name tag reads “Alice.” Netflix’s October 3, 2025 explainer interprets the image as a suggestion that Borderland and its games could be heading overseas. Marie Claire likewise reads it as leaving the franchise open to continue.
The scene does not explain who the waitress is, how the games might spread, or whether Arisu and Usagi will return. Netflix said on October 3, 2025, that there was no word yet on a fourth season; that dated statement is not a current renewal-status update.
How Season 3 relates to the manga
Netflix’s series is based on Haro Aso’s manga, published by Shogakukan. The manga is the source material, not a Season 3 companion volume: the Netflix-original Joker tournament should not be mistaken for a Season 3 plot taken directly from the book. Readers interested in the adaptation’s starting point can explore Netflix’s ending explainer and its release announcement, which identifies the manga basis and credits Shinsuke Sato as director and co-writer with Yasuko Kuramitsu; Yutaka Yamada composed the music.
