In film and audio, walla is the indistinct murmur of background voices that makes a setting sound populated without drawing attention away from the main dialogue. The usual story traces the name to early radio performers repeating “walla” to imitate a crowd, but the sources available do not establish who coined the term or when it first appeared.

What “walla” means

Walla is background crowd conversation: a wash of voices that suggests people talking in a restaurant, on a street, in a market, or at a gathering. Individual words are not meant to be clear enough to compete with the scene’s principal dialogue. The Audio Engineering Society defines it as background crowd noise in a movie, while the University of Kiel film lexicon describes diffuse, individually unintelligible conversation.

Why it is called walla

The commonly repeated explanation is that early radio performers found that several people saying “walla” together created a crowd-like sound. Filmsound.org presents this as an old-radio origin; audio retailer Sweetwater calls it a legend. The accounts explain the practical appeal of the syllable, but do not document a specific first use, date, or original coiner. It is best understood as the usual story, not settled etymology.

What performers say today

Modern walla often sounds less like a group repeating one syllable and more like ordinary, improvised conversation shaped for the scene. Performers may talk about the situation around them, using behavior and language that fit the setting. Voices.com describes this as the prevailing approach, while Filmsound.org notes that performers may be briefed on a production’s period and place and research local jargon or geography. These are reported practices, not universal requirements for every production.

How walla is recorded and mixed

A production may hire a walla group—also called a loop group or ADR group—to create background voices in post-production. The performers can work while watching the picture, matching the scene’s activity; Yamaha describes this picture-based process. Editors then select and blend the voices into the soundtrack so the setting feels active while foreground dialogue remains intelligible.

Other terms and phrases

Terminology varies by region and production. Sources report “rhubarb” as an alternative, especially in the UK, and “gaya” in Japan. Other reported filler phrases include “peas and carrots” and “melone melone.” These examples reflect different ways of producing indistinct chatter, not fixed phrases used by every performer or in every country.
