Peter Drury’s commentary made Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford feel like a homecoming in every sense: a journey through the places that shaped his career, followed by a welcome back to Manchester. A fan transcription of the passage circulated after Manchester United beat Newcastle United 4–1 on 11 September 2021, with Ronaldo scoring twice. The transcription is not an official transcript, however, and one detail differs between versions.
What Drury’s commentary says about Ronaldo’s return
The appeal of the passage is its compressed story: Ronaldo’s route from Madeira through several major football cities, then back to Manchester; the contrast between the gifted teenager and the established star; and, finally, the declaration that he is reunited with United. Its theatrical language fit a night when the returning forward scored twice at Old Trafford.
A fan in the r/reddevils community posted this transcription on 13 September 2021, saying they had written it down from the commentary:
“Madeira, Manchester, Madrid, Turin and Manchester again.

How the match gave the homecoming its payoff
United’s match against Newcastle on Saturday, 11 September 2021, was Ronaldo’s second debut for the club. He scored in first-half stoppage time and again in the 62nd minute as United won 4–1 at Old Trafford. Newcastle United’s match report describes how Ronaldo’s first goal followed Mason Greenwood’s shot, which Ciaran Clark diverted and goalkeeper Freddie Woodman parried. For the second, Luke Shaw drove forward and played Ronaldo through; Ronaldo finished left-footed through Woodman’s legs.
The complete scoring sequence, recorded by Newcastle United’s match center, shows how the game unfolded:

The sense of reunion was visible beyond the goals. BBC Sport reporter Simon Stone described fans remaining after the final whistle, hoping to see Ronaldo during television interviews. When Ronaldo acknowledged them, the crowd cheered again and sang “Viva Ronaldo.” Stone’s BBC report captures that post-match excitement without relying on the disputed transcription.

That context helps explain why Drury’s poetic framing resonated: the match offered a clear dramatic arc, from a much-anticipated return to two goals and a jubilant crowd. The fan-posted words give that feeling a memorable form, but their exact phrasing remains a matter for the original broadcast.
