For a Halloween ghost-story marathon, start with The Uninvited and Dead of Night, then move through psychological hauntings, Japanese supernatural tales, and modern gothic films. This 15-film program treats “classic” as a broad curatorial choice—not a formal canon—and varies the mood so the night is not fifteen versions of the same haunted house.

15 classic ghost stories for a Halloween film fest

The order moves from early haunted-house foundations to anthology and psychological forms, then to international traditions and later reinterpretations. Some selections are eerie or melancholy rather than horror, so the program has room to breathe between scares.

  1. The Uninvited (1944)

Lewis Allen’s atmospheric mystery follows siblings who buy an inexpensive house on the Cornish coast and discover a tragic history attached to it. It is a strong opening for a festival built around the classic haunted-house story. The BFI discusses the film in its horror-film selection. Criterion’s Blu-ray edition includes a 2K restoration, radio adaptations, and essay and interview supplements.

  2. Dead of Night (1945)

Ealing’s influential horror anthology links several unsettling episodes with a framing story, making it a useful change of shape after a single-house mystery. The BFI highlights Michael Redgrave’s ventriloquist-dummy performance in its horror-film selection.

  3. The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947)

This gentler romantic-fantasy interlude keeps the program from equating every ghost story with terror. Place it after the first two films if you want a softer pause before the more psychologically unsettling selections.

  4. The Innocents (1961)

Jack Clayton adapts Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw into a gothic story whose uncertainty is central to its effect. Composition, sound, performance, and Freddie Francis’s widescreen black-and-white cinematography keep the viewer weighing what is seen against what might be imagined. The BFI discusses the film’s ambiguity and craft in its Gothic programme. Criterion’s Blu-ray edition presents a 4K restoration with commentary and interviews.

  5. The Haunting (1963)

Robert Wise’s haunted-house film pairs naturally with The Innocents: both make uncertainty and what remains unseen part of the experience. Criterion includes it among its notable ghost-film selections.

How to shape the night around your mood

For an old-fashioned haunted-house stretch, watch The Uninvited, The Haunting, and The Changeling. To favor ambiguity and psychological unease, pair The Innocents with The Haunting of Julia. Choose Dead of Night when an anthology’s separate episodes sound better than one continuous plot; choose Kwaidan and Kuroneko to foreground Japanese ghost-story traditions. The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is the lighter choice, while Don’t Look Now and The Devil’s Backbone shift the emphasis toward grief or history.
